Question about 1999 Pontiac Montana
My power sliding door when closes will close almost up to the contacts and then opens again as if the cable needs some more slack. When I push the door it does close.
this can be stuck contacts on the door. better to check the sliding contact point for any dirt debris on the slide or it may need some lubricant for easily sliding.

I have had this problem for months now, the door will act as though it is closing, then as soon as it does, it pops right back open. we have taken it to the mechanic several times and they have been unable to fix it. i am wondering if i can just remove this feature and make it a regular sliding door?

The door closing mechanism is either hydraulic/pneumatic or mechanical. I doubt mechanical systems are still used, i.e. with pairs of cables pening or closing the doors. However should yours be mechanical then there is some play between the motor and the gears which winds the cam attached to the cables. Here it becomes critical when there is a play because even if one door has got this play it will affect the entire mechanism and thereafter it can be fixed after a lot of trial and error. The best thing to do in such cases is to attach two magents, one on the door frame and another on the door itself such that when it comes near enough, the magnetic pull acts as the final force which will give impetus to the door to close fully.
However it the operation is hydraullic/pneumatic then there is a adjustment on the arms(door closer/opener) which need to be adjusted for the door to reach the end of its motion. Here ech door has this adjustment to be done to compensate for wear & tear of usage. But this problem is eaier to fix/adjust, because provision has been kept for future adjustments arising out of usage. The oil or fluid chamber which acts as a double piston needs to be checked for any leakage and the level of liquid to be maintained in the chamber. This is also a case of trial and error till you hit the right adjustment but much easierthan the mechanical one. I hope this will help in diagnosing and fixing this minor but irritating matter............................................sodeep
