You have to check the water pump impeller. The coolant pump impeller could be loose and spinning on the shaft or fell apart completely. Also the thermostat could be an issue.

Audi a4 2.8l no heat

take the top off the filler cap run engine to boil. keep it full off water to the top. you will see air bubbles coming out as the engine gets hotter. squeeze the pipes on the rads to help the air come out. when fan kicks in turn engine off and leave to cool down.while you are doing this make sure the fan for heater is off but is on full heat. can have fan on number one on speed that is fine.

I have a 1999 Audi A4 Avant, I keep having to top up the water reservoir, what could the problem be?

If you are talking about the reservoir for the radiator, the radiator pulls coolant in from the tank when it is low.
If you are adding coolant - water every week and there are no external leaks, the engine is burning the coolant out the exhaust pipe.
Usually a leaking head gasket - intake gasket or cracked head.

Check the radiator and the cooling fan. open the hood as the engine temperature rises does the fan come on. if not that the problem, Also do this As the car is warming up(from a cold start) near operating temperature, turn off the car, watch out for the fan, engine of key in your pocket fell the radiator is there any hot or cold spot? if there is the radiator is plugged. Also if the radiator isnt plugged new doesnt mean it works, the water pump itself can be faulty. and dont forget the most important device the Thermostat you did timing belt waterpump they should of done thermostat.

WHEN ENGINE THERMOSTAT OPEN COOLANT HOSE SHOULD BE HOT.IF NOT TURN OFF ENGINE.USE LARGE RAG WAIT A WHILE BEFORE REMOVING RADIATOR CAP CHECK TO SEE IF COOLANT LEVEL DROPPING IF SO ADD MORE COOLANT.CRANK ENGINE UP UNTIL THERMOSTAT OPENS UP.HOSE WILL GET HOT.IF STILL COLD CHECK COOLANT LEVEL.ONCE YOU AIR OUT COOLANT SYSTEM RADIATOR HOSES WILL GET HOT SO YOU WILL GET HEAT.IF COOLANT LOW YOU WONT GET NO HEAT.

PROBABLY HEATER CORE(small like a radiator under dash which water runs through to heat car) if youre not using water in the radiator it could be the Air Con drain tube, are you using the A/C or heater that will give you the answer where the water is from

Overheating

When you mention the radiator having a hot upper in pipe and a cool bottom out pipe tells me that the coolant is not moving around the engine. This could be down to a water pump not working, blocked radiator, thermostat not opening. The bottom hose should be cooler than the top hose but once the engine is up to working temp which is around 85/90 degrees c for an audi the bottom still should be farly hot to touch. Hope this helps
