Ignition coil how do i change the ignition coil on a 2003 dodge ram 1500 5.7l.??

  • jdaum Apr 18, 2009

ok, well my check engine light was on, went to autozone, diagnosed it as the ignition coil. Been having trouble with it starting, key wont turn at all, goes in the ignition but it will not budge, its like locked up. Im guessing this is from the ignition coil problem. How will i know which one needs to be changed, given there is 8 coils.

The hemi has 8 ignition coils, one for each cylinder. They're hald on by 2 10mm bolts and also have an electrical connector and early models have a plug wire going to them. To remove them you must take out the 2 bolts, pull the ignition cable off if its got one and disconnect the electrical connector. Then it pulls right out. The electrical connector has a red locking tab that must be slid over or pulled outwards depending on the design, but DO NOT completely remove the tab. Then push the connector on a little bit, squeeze down the black release lever tab and pull it off.

I have a 2000 5.2 that won't start. Changed PU

Could be one of two things. If you changed all of this and still no spark it is either a ground problem or computer is bad.

Problem with starting my 2003 dodge ram

My father has the same problem with his 2001 Chrysler Sebring, the key will go into the ignition switch but wont turn. Called the dealer and seems the tumblers inside the ignition have gotten stuck, the solution... put the key in the ignition and tap it gently with a hammer (plastic tip if you have it) and it worked fine. Not sure what the guys at Autozone are pull but on a Ram 5.7 Hemi there are individual coils, not one, I should know I also have a 2003 Ram 1500 and have changed the plugs (not fun)... I have a code scanner (Hypertec) and when I've gotten a check engine light I check it with the scanner. Turned out mine had a problem with the air sensor in the intake. $15 part fixed the problems. Good Luck.
