Question about 1994 Chevrolet Caprice Classic

1 Answer

Went to PEP Boys they ran a diagnostic test and said the car needed a tune up. So we replaced the plugs, wires, distributor cap and distributor,IGN coil, Gas filter, air filter, oil change and the water pump since we had to remove it to get to the distributor. Put a new 180 degree thermostat in. Car still run poorly and now get hot at a stop. This never happened. Car still runs poorly just replaced the EGR valve. nothing made a difference. What is next? Thanks for all your information. but on the 1994 chevy carprise classic 4.3 the water pump is in front of the distributor.
How nuts is that...... The cooling system was flushed and yes the water pump was bad so I guess it was leaking on the distributor for a while.
Let me tell you I did not let PEP Boys do any of the work. I know that there warrenties are ****. They just keep coming back with more stuff that needs to be fixed and you are stuck paying the bill.....
They gave me a quote of $2500.00 just for Plugs, wires, distributor cap & distributor. That is just NUTS.
My husband and I did all the work and I know we did a much better job then they ever would have, because it is our only car.
It is a surviver of Hurricane Charley in 1994. My house roof fell on top of it and it still ran, and ran good...............
My husband and I replaced the water pump, flushed the cooling system, put in a new thermostat, new plugs & wires, distributor cap and distributor, IGN coil, gas filter, oil change and EGR valve. But the car still does not run as soon as it was before the problem started.
All the parts cost less then $500.00 so I would have had $2000.00 in labor and still no guarantee that the car would run any better then it does now.
    Pep Boys warranties are ****.
Who knows what the actual bill would have been when they got done.
Keep in-mind quote from Pep Boys was $2500.00 and did not include new water pump, new gas or air filter, new thermostat or IGN coil or EGR valve.
If Pep Boys would have priced what my husband and I did to the car it would have cost $3500.00 to $4000.00 for what?
What Nut would have designed a car with a water pump in front of a distributor how nuts is that...................
If you have any other ideas please send them on. I love this car, not a front wheel drive piece of ****.
We have it to where it is drivable but it still has a problem. Just not smooth like it should be..................

    Thank you for the information

My experince with PEP Boys is they do not honor their warrenties. But I would go back and complain about the car running hot since the only part of the cooling system they didn't change was the radiator they did something wrong. It should not be running hot. Is the cooling fan running? If not they probably didn't reconnect the wires to it or broke a wire. They also conned you on the water pump, you have to take out the distibutor to get to the water pump not the other way around.

Cylinder #1 continues to Misfire

What DTC code(s) are you getting?
You performed a compression test on cylinder #1; did you test cylinder #2?
Compare the readings, if there is a significant difference in compression readings between the two, you may have a bad head gasket, a bad valve, etc.
The bottom line, the problem is internal to the engine.

You already took #1 off the list.
The national auto parts chains (AutoZone, Pep Boys, and Advance Auto Parts) will hook up a

97 gmc 2500 5.7l vortec, won't start, fuel pump works, tried using starting aid and nothing, hooked up a scan tool, and no errors came up, could it be the crank position sensor? or the distribution centre...

See if you have spark on at least two plug wires. If you do, but it is weak, you may just need a good tune up (plugs, wires, distributor cap, and distributor rotor). If you don't have spark or it is only on one wire, take the distributor cap off and see if the distributor is turning while someone turns the key. If it doesn't spin, you need a distributor because the bottom gear is broken or stripped. If it does spin, then it could be the coil, ignition module, crank sensor, fuse or wiring to any of these parts. It will take a lot of wire testing and diagnostics to figure out which part it is if it isn't just a simple tune up or distributor.
Hope this helps. Good luck!

I have a 2008 hyundai accent. My check engine light was on so I took it to pep boys and ran codes. They said it was a mis fire. So I took it to meineke for service. Then it went off now its back on. I have...

A misfire is usually caused by bad plugs or spark plug wires or (on some models) a worn-out distributor cap. The service garage should have fixed that. If they replaced just one plug or wire, chances are one of the others has gone out - plugs and wires are usually changed as a set unless the owner is too hard up for cash to buy them all at once or there is obvious physical damage to just one.

A dirty or failed fuel injector could also cause misfires, but make sure you have proper ignition first since that is more probable.

Wasn't Hyundai one of the first companies to advertise that their cars could go 100,000 miles before needing a tuneup? Check the recommended maintenance schedule in your owner's manual to see what you are likely to need.

What are all of the parts needed for a tuneup for my 95 quests

Spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and distributor rotor. If you replace all of these you would be doing what is called a major tune-up.

A regular tune-up would be just replacing the spark plugs.

You can check the integrity of the plug wires and distributor cap by spraying them with water while the engine is running. If the engine runs ruff, stall, or you see spark arcing from either the wires or the distributor cap than they will need to be replaced.

The distributor rotor always gets replaced when you replace the distributor cap.

You can also spray the coil with soapy water to see if it is leaking as well.

95 geo metro 3cyl. 1.0L no spark changed

Pull one or two sparkplugs and check them for moisture; not fuel, but for water beads.
I don't know how long your engine ran after losing coolant but there is a chance that you lost the head gasket and have gotten water into the cylinders.
