Car shutting off

Hi,
whilst i am not familiar with the actual car i would say...
if it cuts out immediately then its electrical...check coil, ignition amplifier etc.
If the car cuts slowly by losing power, spluttering etc it will be fuel related....fuel pump, fuel pump relay, fuel filter.
Does the car restart immediately or do you have to leave it for a while?
what happens just prior to the vehicle shutting down?

Where is the fuel pump relay?

Hello Charley.

The fuel pump relay is mounted under the hood, on the top of the left front fender.
It will be under a plastic cover and needs to be pulled out from below it.
There you will see two relays, one with a brown cover and one green. The green one is the fuel pump relay. The brown one is the computer power relay.
The computer test connector is there as well.
When pulling the connector off the relay, push in on the clip and pull firmly.

When you turn the key to the "ON" position the fuel pump relay should momentarily click on and then shut off. As soon as you crank the engine it should turn on and activate the fuel pump.

There you are as asked. If you need further help in locating it, please ask me here in a comment.
Thank you for using FixYa.

99 marquis got spark got fuel starts with starting fluid relay seems fine switched

Can you hear the fuel pump come on when you turn the key on? First thing I would check is the fuel cut off switch located in the trunk on the driverside quarter panel.Sometimes this will cut off the fuel if the vehicle is jolted from a pot hole or collision. It's a little black box which may have either a red or black button on it.

99 Grand Marquis Fuel Pump problem

Lets try a new keyswitch and a fuel filter. The key activates the starter side of the ignition. This terminal should power both the starter solenoid and the fuel pump. Although the fuelpump runs on the ignition side continuously, you should be primed when the key is in the "on" position. I would wonder if the pump is cutting off too early meeting the resistance of a dirty fuel filter.
