MX5's don't have a distributor - they use electronic ignition and a set of ignition coils. Should your question refer to a different car or a different part?

The bolt on the bottom of my alternator fell and is lost, i have to know the size of it to replace, anyone know the answer?

Use one of the other alternator bolts for testing, see if the threads are the same on the other bolt hole. If the bolt is a little long or short, just get a different length bolt from the hardware store.

If nothing else, use a tap and die set. If enough meat around the hole, drill the hole and retap the threads. Just a thought.

Starter Bolt Size

you can buy them at autozone, they may even know what size you need. usually starter bolts are the same size and in some cases just the length is different. simply try the one you have in the other hole and if it works then problem solved on the size but the length may still be different.

How do i take off the ignition control module on a 1986 merc marquis

The module is bolted to the distributor with either two T-20 torx bolts or 2 7/32" bolts. They make a tool just for removing these that has both bits. If they are the torx bolts than a t-20 torx bit should work. If they are the 7/32" bolts you will need a very thin wall 7/32" socket. A regular socket will not work.

The tool is very cheap, available at most part stores, and will save you a lot of time.

After you have the bolts out pull straight down on the module and it will unplug from the pickup coil located in the distributor. Don't be surprised if the pickup coil disintegrates when you remove the module.

The other thing is sometimes you'll need to rotate the distributor to gain access to the bolts. There is a bolt that holds a retainer that clamps down on the distributor when it enters the block. If you have to rotate it mark the distributors position before you loosen anything so that you know where to set it back to when you are finished.
