1970 Chevy El Camino starter broke teeth on flywheel. What would cause this?

several reasons
the teeth on the ring gear were damaged from continuous grinding during pinion engagement or engagement of the starter when the engine is running causing a burring of the teeth that altered the mesh ability and jammed the ring gear and pinion
metal in the teeth of the ring gear that causes a jam in rotation
starter motor not engaging before rotating
wrong no of teeth on replacement starter pinion or starter motor

NO--- Check Gear Ratio On Tag Or Tube--Front and Rear Are Not The Same. Or Count Teeth On Pinion And Ring Gear--Divide Pinion Number Into Ring Gear Number For Ratio.

Rear differential leaking on ford f-350 super duty

if you have never done one its best to take to dealer because you have to remove drive shaft and then rear pinion nut and remove seal the tricky part is you have to buy new crush sleeve and thats what sets your pinon depth so that pinion rides in middle of ring gear its called setting your pinion depth if over tighten will hurt bearings and or ring gear and if under tighten will be verry noisey and cause ring and pinion failure best to let someone with special tools and knows what thier doing i use to do all chevy diff at my old dealer your use inch torque wrench to measure the drag on pinion nut and then use 1/2 inch impack to tighten the nut people freak because impack is rated at 600 ft pds but your using inch torque wrench to check drag not how tight nut is good luck

Starter motor spins but the solonoid does not engage, after the car just shut down on the highway

Starter motor spins, but does not engage
  1. Check the starter motor for a seized or binding pinion gear.
  2. Remove the flywheel inspection plate and check for a damaged ring gear.

2000 Chevy Express 1500 Rear End Problem Had Pinion seal replace and universals. After 400 miles has bearing sound in rear. Took it in and it was found that pinion nut was too tight. Shop replaced...

Sounds like the original wear pattern of the ring and pinion was disturbed when the pinion was tightened too much. Once a wear pattern is set in the gears you can't really change it. It might be the ring and pinion wearing that you are hearing and not a bearing at all. It's not the worst thing in the world but will cause the ring and pinion to wear improperly and is annoying. Differential work needs to be done by someone that really knows their stuff to avoid these little problems.

Rear end gear ratio

you can count the teeth on the ring gear and divide that # by the tooth count on the pinion. An example is: ring gear 100, pinion 10 ...100divided by 10 is 10, expressed as 10 to one. (fake #) your diff is likely a 3 series such as 3.23 to 1. or a four series such as 4.11 to 1. If you have four wheel drive it is critical to match exactly. if not you can get better performance by changing ratio to something that better fits your needs. 4 series pull loads well, 3 series are better on fuel.(depending upon terrain)

My rear drive shaft turns when truck is in gear but no move

not a good idea to chg. just pinion, best to chg. both ring and pinion, and for that you will need a dial indiactor, so you can get the right back lash. but my advice to you is, if you have never done this before it best to have a professional do it for you. ring and pinion is not cheap, if you don't get it right it could be an expensive learning curve. also are you sure its rearend? chk.all avenues first OLD SCHOOL.

Just need some info

You can count your teeth on your ring and pinion. Devide ring gear teeth by pinion teeth this will tell you. Or you can call the parts department at a GM dealer give them your VIN # and they can tell you. Please rate.
