I have a 2004 CMax and this is how you do it:

  1. Put the car on a level surface, keep it in first gear, take the handbrake off and rock the car to make sure it won't move anywhere, stick some blocks under the front wheels (to make doubly sure it won't move). The car needs to be secure so it won't move (you may have gathered it is very important the car can't move)
  2. Remove the rear wheel (lay it down under the car on the side that is jacked up - that way the car will fall on to the wheel it if slips off the jack, which gives you a fighting chance of getting it jacked back up again)
  3. Remove the caliper - this is clearly exposed once the wheel is off. If you look at the top rear of the capliper you will see two bolts, one each side, that are encased in a rubber sheath with a hard plastic cap on the end. Remove the plastic cap and then undo the bolts (you may need to get a 7mm brake caliper key, £7 from halfords, if you don't have a suitable stong 7mm hex key). These bolts are torqued to 41 lb/ft so you may need to give them a couple of sharp taps with a hammer to get them moving.
  4. There is a spring underneath the caliper that you will easily see if looking at the front of the caliper (i.e. look towards the disc). Prize this off (use pliers, it has some tension and will hurt if it pings off against your hand).
  5. The Caliper will now lift off (you may have to give it a gentle tap or wiggle it about to free it). You should secure the caliper so it does not hang by the hose - a bit of string or rubber band will do fine. Note at this point that if you have the handbrake on you can't get the caliper off !
  6. The pad at the rear of the disc should now lift out pretty easily. The pad at the front pulls away (or lifts). As with the caliper you may need to wiggle the pads about to get them out.
  7. Refitting is just the reverse, but you must wind the brake piston back into the caliper. This is the tricky bit - the front brake piston can be pushed in, but if your car has ABS the rear brake piston requires a special tool so that the piston can be wound back in, it can't be pushed in. Sealey do a tool that fits, it is model VS023 and will cost about £20. If you don't wind the brake piston back in there is no way in the world the caliper will fit back on (unless you are using the same pads you took out).
  8. The brake caliper bolts should be torqued to 41 lb/ft. Also, use copper grease on all the bolts to make them easier to get back in (minimizes the chance of cross threading the caliper bolts). Don't forget to replace the spring - it is a bit fiddly to get the pins into the holes in the caliper, but long-nosed pliers make the job easier. Don't forget to put the plastic caps back into the rubber sheaths around the caliper bolts- this protects the caliper bolts from road muck.
  9. When both wheels have been done press the brake pedal a few times to reset the brake pistons (if you don't do this you risk not having any brakes the first time you hit them)
That's all there is to it (as Brucey used to say). Probably take about an hour per wheel if you are taking it easy, a lot less if you are in a hurry.

Look on YouTube.com for your particular vehicle. There are a lot of great videos on there. Brake jobs are pretty straight forward. On a 1996 mini van I am guessing you have disk brakes in the front and drums in the rear. Disk brakes are a breeze to work on. Two bolts to take your calipers off, pop out your old pads and pop in the new ones. Drums on the other hand, can be a pain in the rear, literally. The brake drums have a tendancy to rust in such a way that they become one with the hub. A good gear puller and a brass hammer can do wonders in this case. Also most new brake kits come with fairly decent installation instructions to help you out.

What type of rear brakes are on a 1999 Ford Escort


Well, one way to know what you have is to look at the rear brakes....

If it looks like this-

Then you have drum brakes and they require brake shoes.

If it looks like this-

Then it is rotors and requires pads.

After changing rear pads I still have had to adjust cable to the max.have thightend the adjuster in each caliper to the max then backed each one of 1/4 turn and still hardly eny handbrak


sounds like the springs in the emergency brake are weak and need replaced the mount back side each disk inside on the shock strut side just look behind the disk and you see the springs but they are weak

Hi!!

It depends on your driving habits and how much you drive the vehicle. All brake pads, have a metal tab that let you know when the brake pads need to be replaced.. so don't worry about it for now, when you start hearing a scratching sound coming from the brake disks, is time to replace them.

How do I replace the rear brake pads?


Everyone always asks about rear pads because they have a hidden gotcha.
For the hand brake to work, all rear disk brakes need a ratch to keep the pistons out.
They do this with a hidden spiral inside the back of the piston.
You can't see it.
But to then retract the piston, you have to spin it as you push in.
There is a tool at Harbor Freight that makes it much easier.

Rear pisttons on ford 500 will not push in to install rear brake pads


If you have disk brakes, and you cannot fit the new brake pads in the callipers? Loosen the brake fluid reservoir cap to allow pressure to escape. Use a large C clamp connecting it to the front and back of the piston. Turn the screw on the clamp to compress the brake piston then release the clamp. The piston will remain compressed allowing you the fit the housing over the new brake pads.

How do i change brake pads on a 2003 dodge


You have air in the brake system and you will have to bleed the brakes.This will take time but if you keep your eye on the fluid level and then open the bleeder screw on one caliper at a time and let about 1 to 2 cups of fluid come out of each side you should get the air out of the system to regain your brakes.

Ford focas all disks and pads /rear shoes are new changed disks /pads today but pedal still goes to floor pedal is hard until you start engine


The problem is likely either the brake booster which is vacuum powered or the brake master cylinder -- brake booster would be leaking air, master cylinder would be leaking fluid by the O-ring on the piston (internally "leaking by").

This sounds more like a booster failure since the pedal gets soft when engine is started. But probably a good idea to replace both at the same time.

2001 Focus zx3 rear brakes- pads or drums???


If they look like a smaller version of your front brakes where you can see the disc (should be shiny on the side of the disc where the pad touches the rotor) then you have disk brakes.

If it's all black, or all kinda of rusted looking and all you see is a "cap" over everything behind the rim, then it'll be a drum...

95% of the zx3's have drums
only 5% of zx3's had discs. The ones that have disc brakes, also came with traction control as part of the package.

Parking brake seized


Are the parking brakes on, or they won't go on? The cable from the front e-brake pedal back to the rear wheels has probably seized due to corrosion. Soak it over several days w/ wd-40 or some type of penetrating oil and it may loosen up the cable. If u have 4 wheel disk, just pull off rear tires for access to cable connection to brake pads. Use penetrating oil at any points where cable attaches to rear pads (don't get any on the pads ) good luck countrycurt0
