Top motor noise. started about a year ago, and it's progressively getting louder. sounds like a rattling noise, coming from the timing belt side of the engine, i think.

Timing chain tensioner

If this is a 4cyl., check the drive belt tensioner first, there is a TSB for a tensioner rattle that is a common failure . To test , remove the drive belt and start the engine and see if the noise is gone,

Noisy valve lifters

Hi, not sure from that end but how many km you have on that car, cose if it done 100,00.000-120,00.00 km You realy should pay attention or replace your timing belt, cos the noise you hearing could be from there not your valves, but if not changed in time the damage from that could escalate on that car to anywer $2-3 K, eazy. Anyway it just a thout 4 you. G/luck.

have you looked at the tires- if they are wore down the wear bars-little bands of rubber that cross the grooves in tread will be exposed and the noise is your warning to get new tires soon

Your car can start if the alternator is making noise. It could be the bearings going out in the alternator, It could be the tension pulley for your belt. It could be a valve rattling but the sound could make you think it's coming from a different place. Sounds under a hood may sound like it's here, but it could be coming from there. Good Luck.

Ticking and rattling

Is it a 3.9? Does it sound like it is coming from the front of the engine(timing chain)? From the factory the 3.9 didn't come with a timing chain tensioner. They are available after market.

Check all the bolts and fastenings for the heat shrouds around the exhaust manifold to make sure they are there (and firm). If you can undo them without snapping them, take the shrouds off to check for gravel trapped in that area. It could also be a failing cat converter, but a lot less likely. My next step would be to remove the rocker cover and have a look......

99 sl rattle in front when engine warms, not a rod knocking.

The solution is simple and easy, if not cheap. You have a defective upper motor mount. If you open the hood and look for the motor mount on the left hand side near the accessory belt, you will notice that the rubber has shrunk. THAT is the problem.
This will only make noise at idle at a stoplight and doesn't do it all the time.
I have a 1999 Saturn SL and have fixed this problem once by replacing the motor mount. The first time, it was just out of warranty and only had about 60,000 miles on it. It has manifested itself again (started a while ago - now has 114,000 miles on it) I am the only owner of the car and it is now 10 years old. I won't change it again unless they redesign the motor mount.
You can replace the motor mount yourself if you are somewhat handy - it will cost around $100 for the part if I recall correctly. Make sure you prop the motor up; it should take about 30-60 minutes.
