Can i remove the front struts on a kia sportage without compresing the springs

The strut/spring assembly can be removed from the vehicle without compressing the springs. However, if your intention is to replace the strut cartridge, then the answer is NO. You must compress the spring to seperate the strut cartridge from the strut/spring assembly.

How hard is it to replace front struts on a 1998 Kia Sportage?

it shouldn't be too difficult of a fix, unless you have to replace the springs as well. If you are only replacing the struts, you should be able to do it on your own. I recommend buying a Haynes manual for your vehicle -- it will give you step-by-step directions, and safety precautions for your repair ... and even has picture and schematics / diagrams to make sure you are doing it right. In addition, the Haynes manual will give you a list of tools that you will need for the job, so you can be sure you have everything you need before you get started (nothing is worse than getting halfway into a repair and realizing that you don't have the tools to complete it ... and with your car apart, no transportation to get the tools). Haynes manuals are available at most auto-parts stores, and should be under $30 US -- a wise investment as it will help you with this, and any future repairs that you need to do on your vehicle. I have not been without one for each of my cars in 10+ years ... and they have saved me thousands by helping me do my own repairs.
