Question about 1999 Isuzu Trooper

1 Answer

Replaced sparkplugs to DEQ vehicle (emissions) and she started and ran just fine to the emissions facility. When she got home after failing :( we wanted to check to make sure all spark pug wires were intact. 1 wire broke so we went and got a new one. Now when the truck key is turned to the "on" position all electrical dies. After some moving of the wiring harness the headlights turn on but the truck will not start, click, turn over, nothing and the lights won't come on anymore. In Isuzu trooper 91 the wiring harness is REALLY close to the exaust manifold and the outside protector case is melted but all wires are ok. This harness needs to be moved in the future but it's the wiring harness that we originally moved around. Anyone have any ideas? We've detirmined the battery is ok and are afraid to jump or charge it. Could it be a short in the starter? ALL lights go out (dash, internal roof light, headlights etc) Pls help, it's our only vehicle! Amanda

no, nothing yet taking the battery down to get tested. Even with a charger on battery it looses all power when you try to start it. The starter makes a loud humming/buzz noise then it all dies and all the electrical (power doors windows everything) makes a click to reset. There's a knock sound coming from the voltage regulator like it's toggling. The hubby thinks it's a short somewhere, it's just so wierd that this happened instantly. There's also no sparking nor smoke coming from anywhere in the engine.

btw this is a 1991 trooper, not a 1999, somehow it got posted under wrong year, but i'd imagine the basis is the same for electrical problems

1684 is the code what does it mean when it say battery been unhooked in the last 50 starts.

The message is there to allow the inspectors that check for emissions compliance to know whether or not you (or someone else) has disconnected the battery in any attempt to erase or clear codes in the last 50 start-stop cycles. In jurisdictions that only use the on board computer to verify emissions compliance, they will often automatically fail the vehicle for emissions on this message and you must return after the message clear to prove the vehicle is fault-free.

It started dying only sometimes, if you let it set 5 min or so it will start again. Drive it all day runs great then pull into parking lot or stop sign and it dies. Turns over fine but does not fire....

The Catera has a history of stalling/cutoff issues. Many are solved with the replacement of the crankshaft position sensor. It does give the symptoms you describe. I would try that first as it is fairly cheap and easy to replace. If the problem persists after that, you've at least removed one potential possibility.

25597730-01vm304gptfsbcx1qe0tia2u-3-1.jpgThis is the description of the crank sensor from AUTOZONE (cost $44.99 USD)

  • The crankshaft position sensor identifies position of the crankshaft to the ignition control module (ICM), engine control module (ECM) or powertrain control module (PCM)
  • When not replaced, vehicle may experience no start, hard start, intermittent engine shut down, misfire, engine cut out, excessive fuel consumption, CEL illumination and/or failed emission test
  • Proper alignment, positioning and spacing for faster, easier installation
  • Designed to meet or exceed OE specifications in form, fit and function

2004 avalanche. no start, codes po102 and p0442. fuel pressure within specs

With key off unplug the mass air flow sensor and try to start the vehicle. If it starts and runs fine, try cleaning it with mass air sensor cleaner, and plugging it back in. If cleaning doesn't solve the problem it may need replaced.

What are the maximum allowed emissions for a 1980 chevy 5.7 liter to pass a ca. smog test

EGR working, Evap system working. A good decent cat from a newer truck would clean it up a lot. Make sure Air Pump is still there if it was originally equipt.
Make sure oil changed new air filter.
Dont run premium fuel because your engine probably does not require it and it could hurt emissions. Regular is fine.
Look at emiss sticker under hood and make sure the systems listed are operational.

Ford error code p0171 and p0174

You should have replaced the upstream oxygen sensors
at 100,000 miles before they failed

The ignition misfire is a separate problem you have to solve

All that free checking is a waste of time

Go to a local non franchise honest repair shop & have the
vehicle properly repaired

2007 escalade ran fine to the gas station then wouldnt start

There is a possibility the fuel pump may need to be replaced. Occasionally a pump will fail when the cool fuel is introduced in a tank even though the vehicle ran to the station with no problem.

I have an 03 merc. sable. 58000 miles. drove 22 miles home from work parked and shut it off. went to leave 5 min later put in drive and it started to spit and shudder and then just died. 20 - 30 min later...

Start at Changing your sparkplugs wires (if you are performing this on your own replace one by one to prevent mix-up). If problem still persists, have coil pack checked or replaced. Hopefully this helps!!
