I'm sure it is a problem with the converter because when I put the car in neutral the loud rumbling noise stops.

this sounds like you mean the torque converter which is attached to the transmission

are you sure it is the converter or maybe just a muffler or pipe?

This could be a lot of things but to be on safe side check the converter bolts its more likely to be a heat shield it could be a broken mount i would check those three things but start with the heat shields first

What has to be fixed on a 2009 volvo v50 when error code P420 appears?

P0420 is catalyst efficiency below threshold. It means your catalytic converter is unable to clean up your exhaust anymore. Might be that your car is not running properly and creating excess emissions, or it might just be a bad cat. To do this properly, you need a scan tool that will give you live data. Your must check fuel trim, must be no misfires You will need to make sure you are not burning oil, consuming coolant, or having any other driveability issues. At that point and only at that point if the code still persists you should replace the catalytic converter. If you replace the catalytic converter and the engine is running poorly, the new converter will fail right away.

Loud knocking noise on 2000 A6. It was running fine until I took it in to have the serpentine belt replaced because of age. I have just under 89, 000 miles. The car is not losing power, but obviouly the...

A loud knocking noise form the catalytic converter sounds strange, unless it was somehow damaged. Hard to say if it was the shops fault but maybe when they jacked the car up someone bent the catalytic converter. I'd take a peak underneath the car and see if the catalytic converters are damaged. It's possible that the belts are too tight and are wearing out the bearings in the pullys, but that wouldn't impact the catalytic converter. You might want to take it to another shop for a second opinion.

1996 Volvo 960 has shifting problem. Took to Trans shop and they think something is wrong with motor. When shifting from 1 to 2 it seems like the tranny is slipping or dropping down then back up quick...

Check the catalytic converter. You can do this by banging on it and listen for a rattle. Sometimes, the inside gets melted into a little ball and blocks the exhaust from getting out on acceleration. This will cause a serious loss of power and feel like a trans malfunction.

Loud muffler noise up front of vehical.what is

If the noise sounds like your muffler, but isn't coming from the area of your muffler, then you have an exhaust leak upstream from the muffler.

From the front of your muffler, follow the tubing forward to the catalytic converter, then forward to the engine exhaust manifold.

If you start with the car sitting for a few hours to make sure it's cold, you can use your hand to feel for blowing leaks while the engine is running, but chances are you'll be able to hear it. be careful of the catalytic converter itself, as it heats up fast, so check that first.

Once you've found the leak, the fix depends on the emissions laws in your state. If you have none, and the leak is in the middle of the pipe, you can buy pipe patchers (metal preferred) through auto parts stores or catalogs/websites. If you have strict emissions laws, or the leak is at the junction of the catalytic converter and pipe, you'll need to replace the failing part.

Catalytic converter check engine light 2001 s60 volvo

usually if you start to hear a rumble, and by rumble i mean it sounds like a bunch of pieces of metal are clanking around in your exhaust then the catalytic converter needs to be repaired. It could also be the oxygen sensor which is located on top of the converter. Volvo did an interesting job of having them sit on top of each other.

Gas milege falling and loud squeal and rattle

Most likely your honeycomb is broken loose inside your catalytic converter. If it breaks into smaller pieces it can start to restrict the exhaust outout & make starnge sounds like a turbo winding up.I would replace the convereter & go from there.Hope this helps

I took my car to autozone to get the OBDII code. He said it was a O2 sensore but did not know which one? Also is it a 2 wire or 3 wire O2 Sensor for a 1996 850 Turbo?

When the codes are read they generally have an identifying number for the Oxygen sensors. For instance: "B1S1" This means" exhaust bank one, sensor one. THe first sensor of your first bank.

Your VOLVO 850 is an inline 5-cylinder, so it has just one exhaust bank I believe. So it should have an Oxy sensor upstream and one downstream of the catalytic converter. The upstream one is sensing lean/rich condition of your just-burned fuel mixture, while the downstream one measures efficiency of your catalytic converter. I suggest you go somewhere else to have the car checked and scanned. Nothing against the parts dealers, but those guys are barely cashiers, as you found out. It was free right? Worth just what you paid for it, nothing!!! Maintain your Volvo so it will take care of you for years to come.

1998 S70 and After Market Cataltic Converter

How does it "sound like it's going bad"? It's aftermarket, and it isn't the same as OEM. It won't sound the same either. That doesn't mean it's bad. They might have left a gasket loose, making an unusual and loud sound.
