The transmission direct drum is damaged. This is very common on the vehicle. GM knew of the problem and re designed the direct drum with a heavier band.
The transmission most likely will have to be rebuilt. Especially if the fluid is dark, burnt smell , or has some metal and dark particles.
I would get an estimate to replace the transmission if you plan on keeping it for a long time. IF not then have the transmission rebuilt.
