The transmission direct drum is damaged. This is very common on the vehicle. GM knew of the problem and re designed the direct drum with a heavier band.

The transmission most likely will have to be rebuilt. Especially if the fluid is dark, burnt smell , or has some metal and dark particles.

I would get an estimate to replace the transmission if you plan on keeping it for a long time. IF not then have the transmission rebuilt.

Good Luck

the first thing would be to check the level and condition of the trans fluid as poor fluid level or aged fluid can cause these symptoms , when was the last time the fluid was changed ? As you have'nt mentioned vehicle i can only give a general opinion , if you post vehicle details i may be able to give a more detailed answer

Transmission wont shift low 2 second , alredy change trans

I came across this problem before in my case it turned out to be the TPS sensor. I also had a problem like this and it was the Park Natural switch. The ECM could only see park so it would not let the trans shift. These things are easy to check with a scan tool. Good Luck :-)

I have a 1990 Geo Prizm w/ auto trans. Is it suppose to shift more than two times? And it will only shift into second if i manully shift it. The trans. has to warm up before it will even shift into second....

The car is almost23 yr's old and may have never had the tranny flouid and filter changed. this is where i would start befor replacing tranny. This will cost you around $75 but may save you $1500 on a rebuilt tranny. best of luck to you.

I have a 2001 mitsubishi mirage with 1.8l engine. transmission won't shift out of second gear. Go's in reverse but won't go forward until in second and won't shift out of second gear.

Is this an automatic trans?Does this mean that it just revs in 1st or drive unti it goes into 2nd?Shifts are determined by having sufficient trans fluid in.That the internal valve body is functioning, that external shift solenoids are working, and that the speed sensor on the trans as well as the TPS on the throttle body are working correctly.apart from this they do wear out internal parts and then do these types of things.
Check the transmission fluid level while idling in park with the handbrake on.also if the fluid smells burnt and/or looks dark,it is time for a rebuild.Could you supply some more info, what was the trans like on last drive prior to fault, did it just start up and do this or did it begin while driving?

Transmission wont shift to second gear

The vacume hose on the vacume modulater on the trans mission is nt hooked to full engine vacume or the engine isn't making vacume. The governer will make the trans shift to second anyway at redline but it's preety hard on an old car to redline it just to find out/ It's possible that youv'e got the shift detent cable that hooks to the carb set too tight or it's stuck as if it's floored. with the cable disconnected it should shift out al the way real early as long as thirs vacume on the modulater. Gas mileage freaks that drive around slowly unhook th shift cale so the trans shifts into high gear real early. Not much for passing and acceleration but they get a little bit better gas mileage.

1999 dodge ram 1500 5.2 liter, auto, 2 wheel Trans ran perfectly ...then stopped shifting from second to third. wouldn't change gears, even manually. i checked all connections into trans, checked trans...

1999 dodge 1500 5.2 will not shift to second once the engine reaches normal temperture or I shift from drive to nutural and back to drive then it will work fine untill the next time I stop. filter, fluid, shift slenoid, governor sensor have been replaced.

I am far from a trans. specialist but this sounds like a foreign body (dirt maybe) got in the valve body.

Not shfiting right

eric sounds like you have a electronic trans mission or computer controled trans.is the check engine light on ?

second it sounds like your trans is in limp in mode ( only has second gear).

the hard shifts is not good news.

somtimes when the controller sets a code that forces limp in it has to be cleared.

dis-connect the battery for a few min. then try it again see if it shifts but be easy on it and make sure fluid level is good.

if it it still messes up CHA CHING hehe i'll fix it fer 1000 bucks
