Question about 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

Interested in purchasing a 1996 Chevy Cavalier.

Car needs a possible fuel tank / fuel pump replacement. The car costs $400. Are the projected repairs an easy fix and worth my time and money to invest in it.? The car runs but I've also been advised that it will need a new battery. Last but not least-the owner states he lost his title. Is it easy to get a replacement title once you know the last listed owner's name, address and car Vin# ?

The fuel pump for your vehicle new will run about 120 dollars. a new tank will be about 200-400 dollars. how ever you can probably go to a salvage yard and get a used tank and pump for about a 100 dollars labor will be about 3 hrs free if you do it your self or about 300 dollars at a shop. a decent battery is about 50-70 dollars. to get a replace ment title is not a p[roblem other than having to stand in line at the DMV and costs about 15 dollars

Re: where is the fuel pump on a chevy cavalier
Its inside the gas tank! Simply drop down the tank, disconnect the two fuel lines and it will be ready to come out. The fuel pump itself should only cost around $90

How do i get to the fule pump ion a 1996 chevy cavalier?

You have to drop the fuel tank. The fuel pump is in the top of the fuel tank. Then it has a clip that you have to turn to unlock the fuel pump.

Cavalier cranks but does not start

Although a water pump is a iisue with this car and costs a fortune to replace it is not the reason why the car will not start.
I suspect you have a coil pack problem but you first need to establish whether you are missing gas or spark.
When you turn on the key do you hear the fuel pump start. If not you may want to push the pluf in the fuel line to see if you have fuel. If there is no fuel replace fuel pump.. ( In fuel tank.)
If you have fuel and no spark you replace col pack or crank sensor. A OBD 2 reader will tell you whats the problem if you have no spark but it usually doesn't alert you if there is no fuel.

Check your battery terminals and clean them with a wire brush if they are corroded and make sure they are tight. If this doesn't work check the following: Fuel tank empty?, spark plugs incorrectly gapped if they are new, if old- maybe replace them, possibly faulty ignition coils, then maybe the crankshaft sensor is bad or timing chain is broken. I got the latter of information from the Haynes Repair Manual. Check this stuff in order. Good luck.
