1998 Saturn SC1 manuel stick is hard to shift into 1st & 2nd gear

Try to double clutch the clutch pedal. How to double clutch; push the clutch in moving the stick to neutral, then release the clutch and then push it back in and shift into first or second gear. If it works then it is not the shift linkage and could be a clutch adjustment. First how far do you have to release the clutch pedal until the clutch plate starts to engage? If only an inch or so the clutch pedal needs to be adjusted, which is an easy fix (this is more common). The other possible problems could be the clutch plate, throwout bearing of syncros could be bad. If it is one of the previous problems double clutching should buy you some time.

Having trouble shifting...hear strange rattle when clutch NOT pushed in... sounds like a joint or bearing of some sort

Your throwout bearing may be nearing the end of its useful live. Your clutch may be in the same condition.

Please have this checked by your mechanic before any major damage occurs.

you have a clutch hydraulic problem. have the clutch master cylinder replaced and the linkage adjusted if neccessary. you will be money ahead to have them replace the slave cylinder at the same time.

possible clutch pedal hydrallics. If the clutch pedal has alot of freeplay before pressure,it will not produce enough travel to throwout clutch pressure plate which needs to fully disengage to switch gears while running.

1993 saturn sc double overhead cam

you need to check your coil, heat control sensor, timing chain, Also is it a stick shift. It could be a bad clutch plate. If its all worn down, it will slip at higher rpm's.

If you look at what I tell the others in most of there problems. major tune up and clean out your thottle body take it off and clean it out with a lint free town and carb cleaner will fix a lot.

you could have low compression, pull one plug at a time and make sure the psi's are correct.
