both bulbs being so new would unlikely fail.

It is likely that the bulb is just out as the left and right brake lights would be on the same circuit. Unless there is a strange wiring issue simply replacing the bulbs should correct your problem.

The issue with brake or stop lights on Highlanders 2001 thru few years is the poor connection between the grey wiring housing and the point that connects to both the stop lights on that side. I have uploaded few pictures on other sites, but since this site doesn't have that option - else it would be lot easier to understand.
a) Do the routine checks - like stop-light fuse and the bulbs if they are not burned out. If stop lights on the other side work - then fuse is fine, check both the bulbs on the side it is not working.
b) If both the bulbs are not working on that side, most probably it is the connection point.
c) Turn and remove the grey wiring housing unit with the backup bulb, scrape the four connector points and pull them up a little, so that they connect when you put it back and close properly.
See the pictures in other sites - on how to do it.
Note that I am referring the grey wiring housing unit to which the backup-light is attached - while the tail lamps are attached to the beige holders and indicator/hazard lights are attached to the white holder.

My driver side brake lights are not working on my 2001 Toyota Highlander but the parking lights do...connection is only good on one out of 3 on both lights...changed bulbs and switched sockets so I know...

Have you probed the wiring to the bulbs to see if there is 12 volts makeing it out? Go from the switch out and check until you locate whwere the circuit is lost.

RE: 2002 Toyota Highlander 2.4cyl. 4X4 Base Model

I am a Certified Technician and have basic knowledge with electronics in electrical wiring. I searched the web and discovered this is a common problem.

I fixed the problem and it was a simple procedure... The problem is with the reverse light socket at the side with no brake light. This socket functions as a hub to direct current to the brake bulbs.

Remove reverse light socket and re-seat bulb. Check for loose or broken prongs. Replace if necessary.

Swap the reverse socket with the other side.

2001 Explorer Sport ,Rear Driver Brake Light and Turn Sig. Broke

Rear lights are double filament bulbs one side for the lights other side for the brake/turn signals so it still may be a bulb. Do u have a test light or volt meter you can check to make sure u have power there when brakes or turn signals are activated. Or just try another bulb.

Replaced bulb on right brake light still out

if the left is ok we know that it is not the fuse, so remove the right bulb out and then use a test light and check if you have power at the socket in which you took the bulb out from, usuly the socket is bad or you may have a wire that is broken
