How to tighten the Harmonic balancer and not move the timing gear.

    I am replacing the harmonic balancer with a solid piece. Having read a number of online and manufacturer claims, it is the better replacement. Problem is there are no holes in the is solid......will the timing gear move when I torque the bolt for the pulley?

Trust me, you DO NOT want to replace your balancer with a solid piece. The rubber in the original serves to dampen firing pulses and crankshaft twist. With a solid balancer the engine will shake itself to pieces even if you don't feel it. DON"T DO IT!!! I know a lot of Mitsubishi forums and resellers push the solid balancers, but they are dead wrong. The rubber isolated balancers are made that way FOR A REASON! If you insist on continuing, yes, the engine will spin when you tighten the bolt if you use a wrench, but should not affect timing if the belt is installed properly. Best way to tighten the nut is with an air impact gun. If it's a manual trans car, put it in gear and have someone stand on the brakes HARD while you tighten the nut. If the belt is off the car, and the balancer moves, you will have to realign ALL the timing makes, a VERY difficult job on a 3.0 Mitsu. I know, I own one!!! An alternative way to lock the engine from turning is to insert a bolt and nut between the cam gears. I can't remember what size I used, so it may take a bit of trial and error. A couple pieces of duct tape on the bolt will keep it from gouging the cam gears.

Takes a harmonic balancer puller to get it off. By no means beat it off with a hammer. To reinstall, tap it on with a hammer until you can get 5 or 6 threads on the bolt in it. Then tighten it down with the bolt.

There is one bolt in center of pulley/harmonic balancer. Sounds like the harmonic balancer has started going bad..if bolt in center of pulley is loose...which is fairly uncommon tighten which you just tighten Iike any other bolt. If it is tight then you will need the replacement. Replacement is a good bit more involved. Radiator has to be removed, special tool, harmonic balancer pulley remover is will remove pulley. Then you line up pulley with keyway..tap on with rubber hammer until pulley is on far enough for bolt to be started..tighten the bolt and it pulls the pulley all the way into place.

Here's another question. While using the puller on the damper, how do you keep the crankshaft from turning the engine???

Stick a long screwdriver or punch between the bolts on the gear puller and use to hold as you tighten the puller bolt..

How to change crankshaft sensor on 1999 grand price gt

To get to the sensor, the harmonic balancer pulley on the crankshaft has to be removed. The center bolt on the harmonic balancer is on very tight. To loosen without an impact wrench, remove starter motor and wedge a piece of wood against the flywheel, or use a pry bar and hold the ring gear on the flywheel rigid, while loosening the crank bolt. The engine will try to turn backward when you loosen the crank bolt, so you have to hold the flywheel rigid. Once the bolt is removed, see if you can get the harmonic balancer pulley off without a gear puller. Just try tapping it to see if it slides off, or use two screwdrivers on each side behind the pulley and see if you can start it sliding off. If it is on very tight, as many are, you will have to get hold of a harmonic balancer removal tool-a simple, inexpensive puller that bolts onto pulley and can be drawn off. You might be able to rent the tool too.
BTW, you will need to have the wheel removed from passenger side, and the inner fender cover removed to get to the crankshaft. Once the pulley is off you can unbolt the sensor and put the new one on. GM recommends using a sensor alignment tool to install, because the thin vanes on the back of the harmonic balancer pass through the sensor, and if not aligned right could damage one or the other. If you don't have the tool, put the sensor on loosely mounted, just snugged up finger tight, then test the pulley will slide through the sensor slots without touching either side of sensor. If it looks right, tighten down the sensor in place, install the harmonic balancer pulley and tighten the center crank bolt to about 105 foot pounds.
Wedge the flywheel again so the engine won't turn when tightening the crankshaft bolt.

Had my Harmonic Balancer replace now it shuts off after 10 mins of it being on

the garage may have did something to the crank position sensor that is located behind the harmonic balance. there is a ring gear there to for the timing

How do you set the distributor timing on a s10 4.3l

1st look under the hood, and read the veci label for timing instructions, then take a piece of white chalk or white paint , and mark the line that is on the harmonic balancer, then hook up a timing light to the positive and negative cables on your battery, red for positive, and black for negative, then hook the clip or adapter of the timing light to the # 1 spark plug wire, start vehicle, and loosen bolt at bottom of distributor, and turn the distibutor to where the white mark on the harmonic balancer will line up with the timing marks for that vehichle, be sure to look under the hood to refer by what the manufactures timing is for your S-10, after you have the timing marks lined up, then retighten the bolt at the bottom of the distributor, and then check your timing for accuracy, if the timing moved while you tightened down the distributor, you will have to re loosen the bolt and re adust the timing to it's correctness, sometimes , it helps when you have 2 people to do this, 1 can watch the timing marks and hold the timing light, and the other can loosen, and tighten the bolt , while both is communicating to each other in order to get the timing right.

How to remove the harmonic balancer pulley on a '96 dodge caravan 3/0L?

i have a 1998 caravan my harmonic balancer fell off my qquestion is is there 2 separate keys that hold on the timing gear and the balancer pulley on, i have been to the dodge dealer and they printed me out pics but i still don't know for sure if the timing gear has it's own key or there is just 1 long key that holds both the timing gear and the balancer ......PLEASE HELP

I need a how to to change harmonic balancer for 1995 nissan maxima. step by step

First remove right front tire and support vehicle with a jack stand. Remove splash guard lower portion near the harmonic balancer. Remove all drive belts. First remove the A/C alternator belt. Loosen the 14mm bolt at the front of the belt tenioner and then loosen the tensioner bolt (it is the one that stands out, you use a socket on it.). The power steering adjuster bolt with be gained from the bottom. It has a 12mm bolt head on it. You will break the jamb bolt loose first and then loosen the adjusting bolt. Pull down on the belt the help move it after you've loosened it some.Then remove harmonic balancer bolt (19mm).If the harmonic balancer will not slide off the crankshaft then use a two finger gear puller. Place the harmonic balancer bolt back in the crankshaft but do not tighten it. Leave it about a half inch from being all the way in. Next place the puller onto the harmonic balancer (one finger on each side securely press into the belt groove. The center puller bolt will rest against the harmonic balancer bolt head. Tighten the puller bolt and make sure the harmonice balancer bolt does not turn. The balancer should come off at this point.
