Question about 2008 Dodge Ram 2500

Turbo and emmisions problems

I have an 08 Ram 2500 6.7L diesel with 21,000 miles. I have had the truck in the shop several times due to engine light coming on. First time at about 5,000 miles the exhaust system and turbo needed cleaning. At 12,000 miles the turbo was replaced. Now at 21,000 miles I just got the truck out of the shop again for exhast system and turbo cleaning. I use only ULSD. I have heard of many other people having the same problems. Obviously Dodge has a flawed design and have not stepped up to the plate with a permanent fix. Do you know of any fixes for this problem?

The dealer is currently cleaning the exhuast system and has replaced the turbo under warranty. They are not fixing the problem permanently just temporarily getting the check engine light to stay off for a while. Each time I took the truck to the dealer was due to the check engine light. I am also experiencing poor fuel milage. The truck had great fuel milage when I got it (around 18-20mpg highway) and now I am only getting about 12-14mpg highway.

I've done quite a few of these cleaning procedures with relative success. Occassionally one comes back and needs it again and next week I'll be replacing my first turbo. Most people are far too lazy to go through the entire procedure. It should take a whole day. Also, the pcm software NEEDS to be at the latest update level. Some things you can do are avoid unneccessary idling, use your exhaust brake (if equipped), and don't drive it like a girl scout. It's a 400 hp turbo diesel built to do WORK, not cruise to church on Sunday. If you don't work with it enough to utilize the power you should throw 6 or 800 pounds of cinder blocks in the back and head out to some good hills or mountains every couple of weeks. Short trips are also bad for it. Atleast once a week, I'd take it on a 20 mile or longer ride at continuous speeds no less than 55 mph. It's an awesome truck and could relocate the pentagon if the need arises. It was built to work. It wants to work. Try not to waste that on soccer practice.

Diesel. Reduce power lite turned on. Shut off engine and started back up - lite is off. Can it be driven?

Jerry, Drive to a good shop. So many things can cause reduced power light unfortunately. The first step would be to get the truck hooked up to a scanner/computer and have the computer scanned for trouble codes. One thing that you could try is to drain the water from the water separator that is mounted on the frame under drivers front door. If the PCM picks up on water, power is reduced until water is removed/drained. It could be an exhaust sensor that is reading faulty. Unfortunately from here its impossible to tell you exactly what the fault is because there are just so many engine sensor inputs that could cause your problem. Check the attached links, forums, instruction and guides, Good luck

No power and blowing black smoke can't here the turbo

Remove the turbo, soak it in diesel, see if turbines start to spin. Normally it's just carbon sticking on the blades or burned out bearing. Let the turbos cool down before shutting off the engine.

The Turbo Charger does not seem to engage .I was led to believe that after around 30 miles per hr. it would be like haveing a passing gear. Oh yes the car is a 1984 Nercedes SD 300 series Desiel.

The turbo charger has more to do with rpms than road speed. The turbo uses exhaust gas leaving the engine to push more fresh air into the engine thus creating higher compression and more horse power. You should feel some boost above 1500 rpms if everything is working properly. If not then you should have the system checked by a dealer or a good diesel shop.Good Luck!

I have 2004 dodge 2500 with 5.9 cummings it has excessive blow by and blowing oil out slobber tube what is my problem

I have 2004 Dodge 3500 w/ 5.9 Cummins , at about 80,000 miles I had excessive oil fumes coming from underneath the hood of the truck . Fumes came from the slobber tube . Took it to the dealership . At first they replaced the fuel rail . Problem got worse . Took it to the dealership again , Oil pan dropped , engine head removed , fuel tank checked , at my cost at first . Results , number one piston top pitted like some took a pick axe to it , parts of piston rings missing , number six piston top clean , but parts of the rings missing as well . This took 17 days for the dealership to find out and to agree to have the engine repaired under warrenty . 14 more days to order and install new engine and turbo . 31 days in total to repair an engine that is defective . Two other engine were in the shop at the same time with the same problem . I now have 100,000 miles on the truck and only 20,000 miles on the new engine with the signs of the oily fumes showing up again . So , rings crack , pieces make their way out of the engine block thru the turbo , back pressure in the crank force the oily fumes out of the slobber tube . That has been one of the problems I have experienced with my Dodge Ram . I am not impressed with my 2004 Dodge , however , my 1995 Dodge Ram was great . Is the new Cummins Engines a true diesel with a replacable cylinder sleeve ?

I hope that this is not your problem , but the fastest way is to check compression in each cylinder and crank case pressure .

My Saab 9-3 turbo wastegate seems to be stuck open. Pressure builds but will not kick on the turbo. Suggestions?

I think the actual problem may be generic to Saabs of the same age. So maybe this information will help many others

Yes the turbo was faulty but no it was simple to fix and did not cost me a lot.

the wastegate ( a valve which is opened to switch on the turbo) is driven by a vacuum actuator - and the actuator leaver arm which connects to the wastegate to the actuator had fallen off.

So The wastegate valve was stuck semi open up and never moved.

This does not directly show any engine error or cause any emissions
problems, as the car passed an a mot before immediately before the fault was found.

My local garage man did the work needed in 2.5 hours on the ramp and did not have to take much too bits to make a good repair.

Car goes like a train, and the engine management light - which was coming on at odd times has since stayed off.

I suspect that the management light which was coming on due to emissions sensors -- triggered by some series of events which cause the emmision to go out out of line, due to the turbo not fully working.

97 Gmc Savana,6.5 turbo diesel vacuum pump not rotating

If the pump is not rotating all the time then it's due for replacement. They are not supposed to stop while engine is running. 227K miles is a lot of miles for any engine component.
