Question about 2001 Honda Odyssey

Check engine lite comes and goes after new O2 sensor installed?

2001 Honda Odyssey van with 123k miles. Had a shop put in a new, generic replacement sensor for Bank 1. Diagnostic code P0420 indicates catalyst system efficiency below threshold bank 1.

Any ideas on how to get this to clear. The shop I had do this tried to disconnect battery but no luck. I have tried revving the engine then drive for 10 min at highway speed, etc as one tech note suggested. But still no luck. This has been happening now for 5 months.

THE SENSOR IS TELLING U THE CATALYST IS WORN OUT, THAT IS WHAT P0420 MEANS, CHANGING THE SENSOR WON'T CORRECT A WORN OUT CATALYTIC CONVERTER. THE CODE WILL NOT CLEAR UNTIL THE PROBLEM IS FIXED, PERIOD END OF STORY.

P0420 error code honda odyssey

You don't necessarily need a new converter. I had this code on my 2006 Odyssey at around 150,000 miles for both the front and rear converter and only needed new downstream O2 sensors ($40 for the back, $60 for the front). This is why my car never sees the inside of a dealership shop, they're happy to replace your converter for >$1000 without even looking at the problem. A little troubleshooting goes a long way here. I grabbed an engine code reader from the local auto parts store and read the O2 sensors with the engine running and noticed the voltages on them were erratic, and they shouldn't be. Mine were reading ~ 0.8 volts, then would jump down to < 0.1 volts for a couple readings, then back up to 0.8. The downstream sensor readings should be fairly stable.

Tcs light comes on after about 5 miles. Tranny was rebullt 10k miles ago. 2001 honda oddysey. Van has 139k miles on it

TCS is Traction Control. There should be a speed sensor at the drive wheels. If they are not reading properly, this will cause the light to come on.

what is the code that turned the light back on?????? if its a P0420, the cat is not good enough. you may need one good enough for California or a better quality converter.

My 1999 Honda Odyssey Van has ~ 205000 miles on

I'm surprised a dealership made that mistake. Honda did start making engines to take oil until around 2003. I would go back and have them put the correct oil in the van. 5W-20 is not as thick as 5w-30, so the engine may start to make louder noises down the road. Just stick with 5w-30 for what the engine was made for.

Engine light stays on ,2001 honda odyssey ,van vibrate and rev sometime it idle .

Hello greypaulet,

Thank you for choosing fixya.com.

First, take your van to a mechanic or a local auto parts dealer (if drivable) and ask to have a diagnostics test done on it. The representative will let you know what codes show up, and the parts or components they represent. Chances are, you need to replace your O2 sensors; I had this problem with my van recently and replaced both my O2 sensors. My light is off, the idle is smooth, and there are no vibrations, or any shaking. If you haven't done so recently, it would be a good idea as well, to replace the spark plugs and wires; as well as the distributor cap and rotor, or coil pack if needed (if equipped in place of a distributor) Have all your belts checked as well, and replace if necessary. Also, make sure your radiator hoses are in good condition as well.

I am almost posotive however, that the O2 sensors are the culprit. It wouldn't hurt either to replace the fuel filter as well.

I hope this information is useful, and helps get your vechile running properly. Thank you again for choosing fixya.com.

2001 Honda Odyssey Transmission Problem

The Odyssey has notorious bad transmissions from 2000-2003. You will not get anything on a trade, the trans can be fixed for about $2k. If everything else on the van still works and you like it, figure you bought it again for $2k. I changen my wife's Odyssey trans at 175K miles for $2k and she is happy so therefore I am happy too :-)

not hard at all, many people have had O2 sensor problems if they have installed an aftermarket Cat ( Not Honda ) get new bolts and you should be done in under an hour.
