Question about 1988 Ford Thunderbird

1 Answer

Gas peculating in carburator and running into motor.

1965 Thunderbird has a problem when the car is shut off when warm the gas starts to kind of perculate in the carburator and runs into the engine until the fuel emptys from the bowl. The engine is new the carburator is new and it doesn't run hot. Car runs great other than that. Did the same thing with the old motor and carburator. Radiator and water pump are new also.

This only happens when the car is not running.

There is exhaust that runs from head to head under carburetor . there should be a damper that opens when cold and closes when hot . when it stays open after motor reaches operating temperature gas in bowl boils and gas is a vapor instead of a mist and causes motor to run lean .

Someone gave me one in tbe fall and I tried cleaning out the carburator and it didn't help. I bought a new carburator made for that model on Ebay and it ran like new. Not sure if that's your issue, but that worked for me.

My 1987 Toyota Tercel will not run. It will start, but wont stay crunk unless im giving it gas. I check for vacuum leaks and no sucess.?

if you have a carburator then you have a blocked idle jet, simple job unscrew **** dirt out clean jet hole through, replace, (change or fit fuel filter to prevent it happening again. )
to tune is simple replace jet start motor and warm up . when at operating temp turn jet out and then in till motor runs rough then screw back out til motor smooth out , and runs sweet, if it cuts out when slowing car down (while driving) screw need to come out a slight bit more

My 1969 mustaNG WILL SHUT DOWN SOMETIMES WHILE DRIVING. hAVE TO RESTART

Hi,
I love older cars. If they get gas and get fire, something occurs. I really would like more detail on what's happening with the car (symptoms)... but I'll throw a few bones out there.
If the engine is dying while driving, I would have to check out a few things...
Fuel issues, assuming the fuel pump is ok:
1. If it tends to die as you give it gas, it's possible the fuel filter is clogged enough to starve the carburator.
2. Is the carburator flooding out?... should be able to smell gas and it wouldn't want to crank readily.
3. Is there condensation in the carburator from "bad gas"? Get a fuel addative and pour it in your tank. It'll evaporate condensation build-up in the tank and carb as you run the engine.
Electronic issues:
1. If it runs great at all revolutions but suddenly dies, I would look at any loose wiring connections at the coil. Also check the hot wire to the coil and insure it isn't arcing on the engine due to burned off insulation.
2. Make sure your points/condensor are good and points gapped properly.
3. If it backfires out the carburator or exhaust when you give it gas, the timing is off a hair...
I may have missed a point or two, but these are pretty basic trouble spots. I hope we nailed it.
Cool car, by the way!
Hope this helped... Good luck!

these cars are carburated motors and need around 10 minutes to warm up because they operate at higher temperatures.

idle air control is used for assisting in fold starts. It sounds like its not functioning propperly. FYI your car is not carberated, its called a throttle body.

U are going to have to pull the gas tank out and replace the fuel pump inside the tank, this is common when you run the gas completely out, the pump is cooled by the gas it runs in, if u run it low allot it burns out the pump bearings very quickly.
