Question about 2000 Dodge Stratus

Fuel light keeps popping up and when it does, fuel gauge drops

I just had a new battery installed, a new water pump, and a timing belt. The car seems to run fine, but even though there is half tank of gas, the fuel light comes on and goes off at various intervals (maybe 10 times per minute). Everytime it comes on the gas gauge drops a little. When the light goes off, the gauge goes back to normal.

Sounds like a bad sending unit. It clips to the fuel pump in the tank. It's not hard to remove and pretty self explanatory if you look at it, but if you don't have any experience with fuel line quick disconnects, I wouldn' try it at home. If you do try it, remember 2 things: Run that thing as low on gas a you can first and when it comes to disconnecting the fuel lines, push, squeeze (until it clicks), then pull apart. The tank is held in by 2 or 4 13 or 15mm bolts and a few hoses and lines. Mark the position of the pump before you pull it out.

Ever consider the fuel pump has failed?

You don't run wires to items to test them

The are many places you can power up a fuel pump,
but you need to check for a good ground connection

You have a 16 year old vehicle, may as well drop the tank &
get involved.

How can I take off the fuel pump on my nissan altima 2001

The procedure is as follows:---
  • First of all get the fuel pressure released and then disconnect the negative battery cable .
  • The fuel pump can be seen by taking out the rear seat and removing the access cover. Unplug the fuel pump's electrical connection and disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel pump. Remove the locking ring or screws with a socket wrench and disconnect the fuel gauge assembly so that you can disconnect the fuel tube from the fuel gauge.
  • Remove the fuel pump by holding the connector for the fuel line in one hand while pressing down on the two locking tabs at the same time. Lift the fuel pump out of the fuel tank. Discard the O-ring.
  • Install the new fuel pump using the items included in the kit, especially the O-ring. If you have a threaded lock ring, torque it to between 22 and 26 ft. lbs. If you have lock ring with six retaining screws, torque them to between 18 and 22 in. lbs.
  • Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

Is there an easier way to replace the fuel pump other than dropping the tank?

No, the fuel tank must be dropped if there is no access door (which there usually isn't for safety reasons).

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION NOTE: To gain access to the fuel pump, it is necessary to remove the fuel tank.
    1. Depressurize the fuel system and remove the fuel tank from the vehicle.
    2. Remove any dirt that has accumulated around the fuel pump attaching flange, to prevent it from entering the tank during service.
    3. Turn the fuel pump locking ring counterclockwise using a locking ring removal tool and remove the locking ring.
    4. Remove the fuel pump and bracket assembly.
    5. Remove the seal gasket and discard it. To install:
    6. Put a light coating of heavy grease on a new seal ring to hold it in place during assembly. Install it in fuel tank ring groove. Fig. 1: Fuel pump and sending unit used on the Regular Cab Ranger pick-up 89685g02.gif
Fig. 2: Fuel pump and sending unit used on the Super Cab Ranger pick-up 89685g03.gif
Fig. 3: Fuel pump and sending unit used on the Explorer and Mountaineer 89685g04.gif

    7. Insert the fuel pump assembly into the fuel tank, then secure it in place with the locking ring. Tighten the ring until secure.
    8. Install the tank in the vehicle.
    9. Install a minimum of 10 gallons of fuel and check for leaks.
    10. Install a pressure gauge on the throttle body valve and turn the ignition ON for 3 seconds. Turn the key OFF, then repeat the key cycle five to ten times until the pressure gauge shows at least 30 psi. Reinspect for leaks at the fittings.
    11. Remove the pressure gauge. Start the engine and check for fuel leaks.

On these vehicles, is possible to remove the fuel pump and/or gauge assembly by working through the access panel under the rear seat cushion instead of having to lower or remove the fuel tank.
    1. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure, as outlined earlier in this section, but keep the rear seat cushion off and the connector(s) detached.
    2. If not already done, remove the protector.
    3. Disconnect the fuel pump hoses and connectors, then remove the fuel pump from the vehicle.
    1. For FWD vehicles, place the fuel pump in the vehicle, aligning the packing positioning projections with the holes in the fuel pump.

    1. For AWD vehicles, perform the following:
      1. Check to be sure the fuel tank packing is not damaged. If it is, it must be replaced.
      2. Place soapy water on the inside of the packing, then install the fuel pump assembly. Do NOT tilt the assembly during installation.
      3. Apply soapy water to the outside thread of the fuel tank. Use special tool MB994180 or an equivalent spanner wrench to tighten the cap to the specified torque. Make sure that the marks on the fuel tank and pump assembly are aligned.
    2. For AWD vehicles, make sure the packing is installed properly.
WARNING Make sure the pump assembly does not turn together with the cap when tightening the cap. If the mating marks are not aligned, the position of the flat will not be correct and the fuel gauge indicator light and gauge will not work properly.

    1. For AWD vehicles, check for leaks as follows:
      1. Apply soapy water to the circumference of the cap.
      2. Choke the vapor hose and main hose, apply and internal pressure of 1.5 psi (10 kPa) or less from the return hose and make sure no bubbles form in the soapy water.
    2. Install the protector and attach the fuel pump electrical connector.
    3. Install the rear seat cushion.
    4. Connect the negative battery cable.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

    Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!
