The temperature light on my 1986 buick century goes on as soon as I start the car. I topped off the oil and coolant is fine. What could be causing this?

Sounds like a faulty coolant sensor. Best fix is to replace a faulty coolant sensor will cause poor gas mileage and in some cases cooling fans will not work which could cause overheating.

Have 307 86 gas in oil some pinging not really knocking or ticking. possibly diaphragm on gas pump allowing this through crank case or what should i do

there are only so many ways for gas to get into the oil.one someone purposely pured gas into the crankcase.two the engine is running very rich and not able to burn the excess gas, three the fuel pump is leaking gas into the crankcase, four the oil has not been changed regularly and the gas has thinned out to the point that it cannot seal the engine from the gas that normally is burned in the combustion chamber. If maintenance is regularly performed that fixes #4,I doubt that anyone would pour gas into the crankcase especially at the price of gas that fixes #1,if the carburetor is working as it was designed to then that eliminates running rich and fixes #2.if the above is good then the only thing left the fuel pump, can leak fuel into the crankcase and they won`t make noise necessarily.as far as the slight pinging one of two things can cause this, the engine is running slightly lean and or the timing is too advanced and needs to be reset to specs

1986 ford ranger that is running very rich

If you have fuel in your oil, your piston rings are bad. Get a compression tester from your local auto parts store and do a compression test on each piston. If compression drops, then my theory is confirmed. The only repair is rebuilding the engine, or buying a new engine. Replacing rings is very intensive work. It's easier to simply purchase a crate motor.

Do I need to prime the engine after it has sat for more than a year. If so how do I go about this?It is a 1986 buick century limited with the 6cyl engine.

No you do not have to prime it. But you should change oil and put 5 gallons of fresh gas in it before starting. The oil collects moisture from sitting. The gas gets stale andding more will dilute old.

Gas in oil

Ok, only two ways the oil can mix with the gas. one is a blown head gaskets. the other would be bad piston rings.
