Where the plug for tranny on 96' jetta is located?

Transmission slipping no leaks but pretty sure the fluid is low and just need to know where the transmission plug would be located on an automatic tranny for 96' VW jetta sealed tranny system so that I can add fluid hopefully someone can help me.

    As you probably already know,vw want to service the tranny themselves so they can charge you 400 bucks to fill up.the plug on the sealed tranny is on the side,there is no dip stick to check the level and they will also charge 300 for a seal kit.a special pump is required to draw out old fluid and pump in new fluid according to vw.I have found a local mechanic that tells me he can do it for $120.There are some vws in his lot so I will take a chance on him and let you know how it works out.

Fill plug on topside of trans... 3 separate locations... use the fill spot farthest right... do not use green circle...

On the manual transmission you go through the vehicle speed sensor (VSS). Its suppose to go 1/2 way up the teeth marks. Does it not say in the Chiltons manual? I can check when I get home.

I have a 1995 Mazda 626 I have been reading about the OD Light blinking and engine light on as I am trying to fix this myself without having to replace the tranny. ( I am a female) I have changed the fluid...

Hello littlemegmb, I am so sorry your having issues with your transmission.
My best guess with the info you posted.
1. I have to ask, because you didn't mention it. Are you sure you used the right fluid?
I am pretty sure that the 95 Mazda is supposed to have Dextron II, or higher. using the wrong fluid can cause some of the issues you are having, and can do perminent damage. If you are not positive that you used the right fluid, please call any parts store and give them the info on your car so they can look up the right fluid. Also, ask them how many quarts you should need when you change the fluid, I think it's around 7 quarts
2. If you know for sure that you used the right fluid, myself, I would let the car run for about 5 minutes, then check your tranny dip stick to make sure that you put enough fluid back in to the tranny, it needs to be checked while it's hot.
99% of the time, when a transmission is slipping, or, it wont move, it's low on fluid.
You do need to be mindful that it is very easy to overfill the transmission, which can lead to other serious issues.
3. One reason that the transmission seems to work better when it's cold, is, all the fluid has had a chance to drain down into the pan, but, once the car is started the fluid again begans to circulate leaving the level in the pan way to low.
I really, really hope that you find it's something simple like the fluid is way too low.
That is my best guess.

Hey guys, trying to check tranny fluid in 98 jetta my daughters just picked up

Drive the Jetta for ten minutes or so to warm up the transmission fluid.
Step 2Drive the Jetta into the work area and place your foot on the brake. Shift the shifter into each gear and hold it there for 3 to 4 seconds. Return the shifter back to drive.
Step 3With the engine running, lift the Jetta on a four-post side-by lift or a drive-on lift. The vehicle must be level when elevated to get a proper fluid level reading.
Step 4Locate the transmission. On the low right hand side (passenger side) of the transmission is a small service plug. Place a drain bucket strategically beneath the plug and remove it with a hand wrench. A small amount of transmission fluid should trickle out indicating that the fluid level is okay. VW recommends during these maintenance service interval checks to test the temperature of the transmission fluid using a scan tool. VW also recommends replacing the transmission check plug each time it is removed.
Step 5If any transmission fluid is needed to be added, locate and remove the fill plug that is on the front left upper corner by the oil pan. Add a little bit of fluid at a time through this portal while watching the check level portal and as soon as it begins to trickle out from that outlet, the transmission fluid level is full.

Hey, I have the same problem with mine, and it seems that a lot of people do. I'll tell you that changing the fluid and filter and seal made a big difference but did not fix it for me and I think it's just common for them to **** out. Mines 97 2.0 automatic. No, you can't check the fluid but there is a fill plug to the front top of tranny. Very interesting to get to, my mechanic had to pump fluid in. For reference I was told 3.25 quarts as the book says "see dealer" about that. Anyway, the seal is on the bottom of the transmission. There should be a cover over the pan. There's 4 bolts, make sure the car is level when you take off. This will require changing fluid and probably filter with seal because it's likely crappy. My seal was leaking. The trans fluid was like oil. Also takes Decron III but I subbed something the parts place said was the same.

How can i check the level of my transmission fluid on a 1996 volkswagon jetta gls?

Assuming it is an automatic. With engine idling, put transmission thru all gears, put back in park, keep engine running, check dipstick for tranny. If it is a manual then you have to crawl under car and remove upper "fill" plug on gearbox, fluid will be up to that level. NOTE: unless your tranny leaks it should never be low!

actually, mk3 vw's with auto transmissions cant just be topped off. you have to have it done by a certified tech, or if your mechanically inclined, you can buy a kit to do it. but, the problem is, there are magnetic shavings inside and when you flush it, you may or may not flush them with it, which in turn could be worse.

OK. First, find your reciept and find out what type of fluid was used and how many quarts. Next find out what type of fluid you should use (because the wrong ATF or wrong amount can cause your symptoms). The fluid can vary from transmission to transmission even though you have the same year car model. There are at least 3 transmissions for VWs for the same year (turbo, 2WD, AWD)

To make sure you know what fluid goes with YOUR transmission, you need to know the transmission number. Next, look up on ALLDATA (or ask the dealer to print this for you) the tech sheet on what fluid goes to what transmission.

Also, ALLDATA will have a page detailing the correct amount of fluid to be used. For example, a complete tranny rebuild may take up to 11 quarts, but a tranny service may only take 5 quarts.

To fill VWs with ATF (tranny fluid), you usually have to pump it in with the engine off from the bottom of the car. This means you have a hand pump that sucks the (correct) ATF and then pumps it upwards into the pan thru the drain plug. Once, you put in at least 3-4 quarts, you lower the car and turn it on and re-raise it.

While the car is on, the ATf you just pumped into it gets sucked upwards inside the tranny.
Now you start pumping more ATF upward until it starts to puor out at a steady, but solid stream. Then you quickly close the drain/fill plug and you're done. It is really easy to not put enough ATF into the system since some techs and mechs only add to the car when off, not off then on.

Also, if you have the wrong ATF in you car, you can sue the dealer for putting in the wrong ATF, thus causing damage to your tranny. This holds up in court and you get a new tranny free of charge.

Please remember that the WRONG ATF is very, very easy to use. And the wrong amount is very very easy to achieve. These (2) points are your starting points. Good luck.

The automatic trans. uses ATF trans. fluid . The manual uses gear oil. The spout to check the oil is located on the side of the trans. right behind the radiator.
