I Have a BMW E46 328i just recently it has thrown up the eml light and the yellow triangle symbol and goes into limp mode only does this when starting engine from cold and letting it idle for a while after about 30 seconds eml light comes on with the yellow triangle symbol and stays on until engine has warmed up to normal running temperature switch engine off then restart engine starts and runs ok eml light goes out,Also i have no communication between diagnostic socket and the DME unit either the one inside the vehicle or the one under the bonnet so unable to read any fault codes.

Il post another solution on this even though in tired of the first one always becomimg the best one even when its not and some times not even close to being right. eml is a throttle fault. either you have a bad throttle or a bad engine wiring harness. if you car was under warranty BMW would replace both. there was a problem with the harness on your car (high resistance at the throttle connector.) so i would suggest replacing the throttle first and see if it fixes it first this is alot cheper than the harness

As for the limp mode unless you have an expensive diagnostic system this usually has to be done by BMW (anything to get ya to a dealership!!). The comms problem, is the key turned in the ignition?

Why does my traction control and eml light come on Bmw e46 ?

I'm sorry Roger but you are going to have to get it to someone with access to the plug in diagnostic unit for Beemers.
there seem to be several things going on but when it coughs up the diagnostic info you may go straight to it?

Engine management light reset

The car is trying to tell you something - limp mode is there to protect the engine if a serious problem is detected. Stop driving it and get someone out to scan the codes and diagnose this.

I hae a bmw 528i 2000 model and the symbol EML is coming on also a yellow open triangle with a cirlce in it. i have no problem starting the car but it does d want to go very fast matter a fact you could...

Your car has entered a special 'Limp mode' which is designed to help a stranded driver limp home after a problem. In this case an issue related to electronic throttle/electronic power control between the cars computer and how it regulates engine variables based on your driving.

You ddefinitey have a problem that at the very least must be identified first and then possibly corrected by replacing a faulty part or resetting a faulty CPU.

You should stop driving the car iimmediately if possible.
The first thing you need to do is have someone 'pull the codes' almost any mechanic anywhere can do this for you and generally it is only a few dollars at most. They do this by plugging in a small computer under the steering wheel to check the 'obd' onboard diagnostics. whenever the car has a problem it sets off a code that can be pull up later to determine what exactly is wrong. Once they pull the code they will be able ot tell you what the issue is. It could be somethign as minor as a loose throttle wire or some type of larger major part failure, getting the code is the only way to find out for sure.

Good luck.

The scope of EML design on BMW engines provides:
• Throttle valve positioning for optimum starting
• Precise idle speed regulation without the use of an external idle control valve/circuit
• Progressive throttle opening curves matched to the driving program (with EGS/AGS inter-
• Cruise control operation without additional control modules and linkages
• Automatic synchronization of the throttles (airflow balancing) for two independent banks,
throughout the entire engine speed range (M70, S70, M73 engines only)
• Intake air volume control for ASC/DSC (Automatic Slip Control/Directional Stability Con-
trol) systems
• Maximum road speed limiting
• Emergency "Failsafe" operation in the event of component failure

BMW (e39 1999) eml and asc lights and in limp mode

Check the ABS brake sensors in your wheels, if they are not functioning properly. It will trigger the computer to engage the ASC auto stability control light as the asc uses the brakes to assist in control. I will also engage the EML engine management light to slow the rev point to limp mode

you could have one of many faults. It would be dvisable to read the fault memory of your engine mangement unit. sounds like your throttle housung unit is more than likely your fault, but is impossible to know without using a diagnostic computor
