Question about GMC K1500

1 Answer

1997 gmc k1500 runs really rich

Truck has new 350 crate engine, with mostly new everything except egr, ecm, and sfi w/ pressure reg.!!! just starting to break it in and truck stalled after going a few miles, started back up but was really rough running and sputtering. it died again and would not start, towed it home and after sitting for 2 hours it started but was rich, and codes read cam and crank sensors, i believe them to be false but why i do not know.. could it be my ecm or just a false reading due to sputtering from richness? also is it possible to stall out from richness? and since everything points to vaccuum, fuel press reg, or injectors im probably going to due upper intake again and replace injection assembly but im curious about the stalling? please any info would help

my distributor was exactly on the 8 when at tdc, so is there anything else with this procedure? some more info to ponder.... one reason i knew it was running rich was the new oil in pan was very thin and runny so my thought was fuel from intake getting by rings from intake (i.e. injectors or pressure regulator leaking) plus my exhaust started spitting out little grey chunks, i was told this was my catalytic conv. burning and breaking up due to fuel getting in exhaust system, also exhaust had water dripping out alot that smelled strong, with that said i pulled upper intake and replaced injection spider with new mfi version so all is new, this wasnt just a try it type thing it was also piece of mind.. (old assembly had 225000 miles on it and i got a great deal on it).. so now its back together, new injection and new oil and filter, and dist. pointing at 8 and it starts up, still getting alot of water from exhaust tips, but it does not smell like fuel now, any Ideas would help? did i totally screw up my cat conv (duels) or is there another problem?

Hi there, first of all you must synch the cam/crank sensors. To do this put the engine on top dead center remove the distributor cap and look very closely at the dist housing there will be a 6 mark and an 8 mark loosen distributor and rotate untill the rotor points directly at the 8. The marks are small so get a light and look closely.Clear codes and restart. Is vehicle still running rich?

Does a 1993 k1500 have a fuse for the injectors?

when engine stalls if you try to restart it check the tachometer. If the tach isn't moving then you proboubly have a bad crank senser which is killing the power to your fuel pump and your coil making you lose fuel and fire.

Had same exact problem on my 97 k1500, although it would crank after shutting off it just would not start. I fixed the problem by replacing the fuel pump in the tank. I learned that the 5.7 liter needs something like 80 psi to start but will run on around 55-60 psi (fuel pressure)

98 gm blazer has black soot from muffler giving code insufficiant switching o2 sensor bank 1 and 2 any ideas ?

Your Jimmy is running rich, air fuel ratio is not correct. Start with cleaning your MAF sensor, a dirty MAF sensor will cause your engine to run rich or lean, other causes would be a faulty fuel pressure regulator. Start with the simple and to common and try cleaning your MAF sensor, you can pick up a can of MAF sensor cleaner at most auto parts store like Auto Zone or Part Source.
Also make sure your engine is running at the proper operation temperature 190", cold running engine will cause the ECM to run your engine rich. Causing the back soot and fouling up your spark plugs and intake ports with carbon.
The ECM was programed to recognize the 4.3 vortec to run at 190" and anything cooler will cause it to run rich and poor on economy.
Thank you for using fixya and good luck.

Turn on the key and listen by the fuel tank for the fuel pump to hum. A common problem is low fuel pressure. It will build pressure when the key is turned, use that fuel, and then the pressure drops. Kind of like when you're using a squirt gun that's getting empty.

1997 gmc k1500 seems to be running rich, very rich

If the engine is trying to flood, it will kill the engine. If you have the spider fuel system, it is noted for problems.
If it cranks good but won't start, have a helper crank it while you check for spark at the spark plugs. If spark everywhere, use a gage and check proper fuel pressure, also, check fuel injector pulse.
I don't know if this may be a problem? below
