Question about 1997 GMC Jimmy
For the last while when I tried to start the Jimmy the instrument lights wouldn't come and it would just roll over and not start After I I turned the key back and forth several times. then the instrument lights would come on and the truck would start. Then it wouldn't start at all on day. I looked at the wires going in to the gear shifter on the floor and a yellow one was off. I pulled out the female end of the clip and removed the metal clip and striped the wire and stuck it in the hole. Then the truck would start. I got a white female clip from the wreakers fromm a 2000 mine is a 1997. the coulour wires were the same but the newer ones were smaller. I striped all the wires and wtisted to gether the same coulours. It worked severeal times I tapeed the wires and it worked several times, Now it won't even turn over and no lights come on the intersment pannel. No noise when I turn it over. Help Please.
Check the "fusible links" under the hood on the drivers side, up in front of and slightly below the hood hinge, under a black plastic cover that is held on by 2 plastic nuts.Or the 2 "fusible links" coming off of the + battery terminal, 1 going to the alternator the other going into the fender well.

Tips for a great answer:

Your shifter is a column shifter, not a floor shifter, right? Is the headlight switch mounted on the steering column? If so, then this "combination switch" may be the problem. If not, start looking for loose wires, especially ground wires, around the steering column area and the headlight switch area.
It would also be a good idea to get access to a wire diagram from a factory repair manual and find out if GM had any Technical Service Bulletins addressing this problem. If I get a chance, I will ask around and see if any of my co-workers ever heard of this problem.
