1983 Ford Ranger Gear grinding

I have a 1983 Ford Ranger 4X4 2.3L 4cyl 4speed manual. I have basic mechanic skills and cant quite figure this out. Our local shops are scam artists in this area and everyone wants to replace the transmission (which is a gost), fly wheel, slave cylinder, clutch.throw out ,and even syncronize the gears...come on!!! Heres the deal...when crusing... shifting into 2nd and 3rd it grinds as if the clutch isnt even engaged...if I pump the clutch doesnt grind @ all. I am going out to bleed the lines right now to see if this works...I hope this is the solution but I think not...any ideas guys?

Your clue is probably that when you pump the clutch twice that it works. I don't know about the 83's but the 96 or so on up have automatic clutch adjustment & when the clutch is worn out that part will not adjust anymore and will create the problem, just like th 97 that i have & haven't changed the clutch yet... (too lazy - waiting for it to totally quit before i fix it) So my guess is that if you haven't changed the clutch, pressure plate t/a bearing stuff, you may need to do that. Ford guys should have told you that.... hope this helps, rick

I have a 1988 ford ranger 2.3l 5speed or 4speed w/over drive. Since i got the truck i have not been able to get it in 5th gear wont even budge. Why?

Susan, either linkage is damaged, out of adjustment, 5th gear is damaged and gone or you have a 5 speed shift knob on a 4 speed transmission.

When starting my 1987 ford ranger there is a grinding noise and it wont start. then it does start on my second try without any grinding noise at all.

It's your starter making the grinding noise, may be going out,to test, you must remove,Autozone will test for free.

I have a 1983 Ford Ranger Base 4Cyl. 2.3L and I'm trying to find out how to install a new fuel sending unit

The fuel sending unit is in the gas tank. You have to drop the tank to replace it.
Be careful when you lower the tank, not to break any fuel lines.
About the center of the tank where the fuel lines were attatched to, is the sending unit. There should be a locking ring holding it in place.
Take a screw driver and hammer and gently tap the tabs on the ring counterclockwise to loosen it, then just pull out the unit. You might have to twist it a little to get it. Good luck.

Grinding when in reverse and tries bogging down at lights

stop shifting so hard. your reverse gear is the same exact gear as your first, so if you shift hard and grind that gear a little then reverse will be harder to get into. you probably need your transmission rebuilt the harder your engine has to work the more its going to bogg down

Water pump leaking

Unless your mechanically inclined, this is a tough fix if you need to replace your water pump. Your water pump is located underneath your timing belt cover (4cyl models) and basically have to have skills to get to it. These skills include removing motor mount bolt and jacking up the engine to get access to bolts that need to be removed. Unless you have decent mechanical skills, you're better off leaving it to the pros. I own a 96 Accord 4cyl 2.2L VTEC and I've done it, only because I needed to replace my timing belt.
