Probably the transfer case encoder motor. Unplugging it at the wiring harness should make the "service awd or smart trac" light come on. This will tell you the awd controller module is probably OK. Common failure item to Bravada's. Try "thepartsladi" eBay store for lowest price motor, beware aftermarket!!! Also make sure transfer case fluid is "blue" GM Auto-Trak II only! If not bllue when checking change twice after driving for a week with blue fluid.

drain the transfer case and check for metal particles in the fluid, there also may be debris bigger than that, try the fluid change in any event then if that doesn't do the trick you will have to overhaul the transfer case, this is a standard transfer case used by light duty trucks and SUV's based on a truck chassis, not the viscious drive type used bt passenger cars like Suburu

I can tell you exactly when my mechanic can find the part cheap enough for me to afford to replace. He's telling me its the computer sensor that automatically switches to 4WD. For now, he has taken it out so that it is in 2WD. The only thing is that the service AWD light stays on, but it works fine now even though it is only 2WD. I'll worry more about the part when it gets closer to winter. By the way, I think he said the part was $400-500 brand new. We are trying to find an after market or used one.
