Question about 1998 Chevrolet Malibu

1 Answer

I need to add an additive to the automatic transmission. I cannot see the dipstick. Someone said there may not be one - transmission may be sealed. I'd rather not change all the fluid.

I hear there may not be a dipstick for the 1998 automatic transmission in a 1998 Malibu. If the Transmission is sealed, is there a way to add an additive without changing all the fluid? Thx

Actually your car has no transmission dipstick...

There is a red fill cap on the transmission bell housing under the
brake master cylinder. You'll have to look real hard to see it. There
is also a bolt on the passenger side of the transmission that you
    remove to check the level.

You have to fill the oil from the fill cap until it runs out of the
bolt hole. Don't ask me why GM did this on a lot of their cars...

Where to check tranny fluid, cant find dipstick??

1999 Isuzu Troopers w/automatic transmissions do not come with a dipstick. It is a sealed transmission just like a manual transmission. The fluid must be checked by removing the fill plug. Emergency brake on, engine running, warmed up ,vehicle in neutral. When removing the fill plug ,which is on the side of transmission- at the top, fluid should slightly drip out. If fluid doesnt drip out you need to add fluid. You will need a small hand pump to fill it.

How to add transmission fluid to 2006 mercedes e-350

If it's sealed it won't need any transmission fluid for 100,000 mi. If it has a dipstick, then add the fluid to the dipstick tube with the dipstick removed.

Just looking to add more transmissioin fluid.. not sure where

Underhood Check-check for transmission fluid at the transmission case screwed in with a dipstick. Most GM vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions have such a dipstick.
  • Engine oil--Check the engine oil level.
  • Coolant--Check the radiator coolant level in the reservoir.
  • Battery-- Visually check battery cables and connections.
  • Automatic transmission--Check the fluid level.
  • Master cylinder--Check the fluid level.
  • Power Steering--Check the fluid level.
  • Windshield washer--Check the fluid level.
  • Belts & hoses--Visually check all belts and hoses for wear. NOTE: In addition to the items listed above there are cases with some manufacturer's where odd components such as manual transmission/transaxles and front differentials many be equipped with a dipstick found underhood for fluid level check. If you are unsure of a dipstick on your vehicle, check with the owners manual. 89531p07.jpg

Where do I ad transmission floid ta a cad catera

These transmissions are sealed units and do not have a dipstick..there is a plug on the side of the transmission underneath for service, but you don't add anything if you don't have a leak. I have a 1998 Catera.

I do not have the owner's manual and need to know how to fill the ATF resorvoir.

ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) is added to the transmission through the dipstick tube. First make sure that you are checking the fluid level correctly:

Start the engine and let the engine warm up for a minute or two.
Then pull the dipstick from the ATF dipstick tube and wipe it clean; reinsert it back into the tube, paying close attention that you are inserting it all the way down until the tube is sealed again.
Then remove the dipstick and check the level of fluid on the dipstick, with attention to the fluid level markings on the dipstick.
Do this several different times to make sure you are getting accurate readings, as some transmissions make it difficult to REMOVE fluid, in case of overfilling.
If you DO add any, add just a little at a time, and permit time for the fluid to settle, so you can get accurate readings of the dipstick fluid level.
Constantly recheck to make sure you do not overfill your transmission.

    Hope this helps.

2002 VW Jetta/ can't find the dipstick to check

There's no automatic tranmission dipstick or even a place to add fluid. You'll need to go to service shop/dealer believe it or not.

    Adding ATF Fluid

You should see a dipstick top with a yellow colored finger pull. It should be near the passenger side firewall. When you remove the dipstick, you will need a funnel to add more ATF.

See this article for additional info.

If you are unable to locate the dipstick, it is possible that you have one of the "sealed" transmissions. It would not have dipstick, and would probably need professional help to service. Although I doubt yours is this model.
