A converter failure is likely to spit metal into the unit.
Likely to make it work, it will need to be rebuilt. Unless you get it for next to free, It's not worth it unless you need a project car to work on.

If the transmission has to be rebuilt you are looking at a major expense 2000.00 - 3000.00 depending on your locale

You will need to have the transmission removed to access the torque converter. A new torque converter should fix things unless debris from the damage has spread throughout the trans, in which case a strip down of the trans is the way to go...or a new/secondhand trans is installed.......

Clutch changing

please spend $25 and get a mechanics manual for your vehicle there are far too many things to explain.. the $5 answer would be:
1. remove trans from engine
2. unbolt pressure plate incrermentally and evenly as not to distort pressure plate
3. check flywheel for run-out, end-play, scoring and burnishing on flywheel/pressure plate, turn,re-surface/replace if req'd
4. install new pilot bearing clutch disc using special alignment tool and torque all bolts to factory spec and procedure , some recomend new bolts
5.reassemble in reverse order

Flywheel and torque converter don't match

Match everything up side by side.If both units are identical in every way there is no reason to buy anything else. Aside from matching, make sure the one you are installing has all the same electrical connections.

It is the end clutch for the overdrive. You do not have to pull the trans to fix it! If you take it to a mechanic he will likely pull the tranny and charge you for it. Here is a step-by-step REPLACEMENT GUIDE for changing it. If taking your car to a mechanic you may want to make sure they are aware of the procedure so your not paying for unnecessary work(pulling the trans).

it sounds like the mechanic didn't properly adjust the inhibitor switch and transmission control cable.
