You can check where it is by using short piece of hose and listening at the other end (like dr's stethescope). I would assume that it is in the valve train system. Hope this helps, Rick

Valve covers are not made of plastic. They are either stamped mild steel or cast aluminum. It is very unlikely that whatever made the ticking sound would cause a valve cover to fracture without the engine misfiring noticeably or other serious issues occurring. Are you saying that since this "hole" appeared, the noise has stopped?

Judging from your description I would suggest having a qualified mechanic assess the problem before driving the car much further. If something has broken in the valve train and metal fragments have gotten into the oil it can cause catastrophic damage to the engine.

2000 jeep grand cherokee has a loud knock in engine. Started out as a ticking sound like a lifter, know it is a loud knock. This is a V-8 Engine

If the noise still sounds like it's on top, I'd remove the valve covers and check the rocker arms to make sure they aren't broken or worn. Also crank the engine over and observe how far each travels. If any are different, a lifter or lifter and cam have gone bad.
If your oil pressure is low or the noise is deep inside the engine, likely you have a crank bearing problem. In most cases it's more economical to get a scrapyard replacement rather than do a rebuild.
Before doing anything like that, have an experienced tech listen to it. Only other thing that can make a noise like that is a broken flywheel. A good tech can tell the difference between noises and give you better advice than I can because he can hear it.

The engine is an E 36 and the is a loud ticking noise coming from the right side front of the engine where the alum cover is in the front it goes away at some higher rpm's but is there on startup and idle...

Not sure of the motor. Assume you are talking about a BMW E36 (325, 358, 318 etc.) What you are probably describing is a valve tap. Sort of a ticking sound not a bang bang bang right? If this is the case you need to have your valves adjusted. Not really a job for a weekend warrior but a search on the car forums may let you decide if this is a job you want to tackle.

WHEN ENGINE IS RUNNING IT TICKS LOUDLY AND WHEN U ACCELERATE IT TICKS FASTER.

A worn valve lifter or a loose rocker arm is causing that noise. To find out which one it is, the valve covers have to come off and check each one. If the rocker arms are snug, then it's a lifter, in which case the whole top part of the engine has to come off to get at the lifters.

Loud tick from drivers side of a 04 ram 1500 4.7 motor water entered cool air in take changed oil and blew out any water through spark plug holes and has a loud tick on drivers side

Check valve clearence on both sides, you may as well. Seriously, to check that it is a valve fault, get a piece of wood, 2"x2" about 2ft long, put it on the valve cover, the 2"x2" end, put the other end to your ear, if you hear a click through the wood, take the valve cover off and check the clearence, then tighten up to tollerance, that should solve the problem mate. If not mail me and I have a few more ideas. Regards Dave.

Pontiac sunfire valve noise

If it's a ticking noise that speeds up with the speed of the engine, it's a worn valve lifter.
You can try tightening it down by taking the valve cover off and tightening the bolt on the rocker arm, but don't tighten it too much, you will end up with other problems.

Knocking or ticking in the engine, under the valve cover ticking under valve cover in 94 cavalier i think it is the rocker arms

you are right its either a rocker arm broken or loose or it also could be a broken valve spring so look for all three While you have the valve cover off to save you coming back and looking again ... thanks Jerry
