The tests for code 48 are quite extensive. Most common causes were the EGR solenoid , and vacuum to it. Its control begins in the PCM under the dash, miles of wiring, then the solenoid. The solenoid is located just forward of the EGR VALVE both being on the R/S of the throttle body on top of the engine.

There is a diagnostic procedure in the factory service repair manual for engine light lit ,no codes . Did you take it to ford dealer ? MIL - is referring to check engine , service engine soon etc...
  • MIL always on when engine is running (no DTCs):
  • MIL circuits
  • For Focus, Mustang, Town Car, Continental, LS6/LS8, Escape, Windstar, F-150, Expedition and Navigator/Blackwood:
  • Instrument Cluster, Section 413-01 of the Workshop Manual.
  • All Others:
  • GO to NB1

SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator After the engine is started, the SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator will prove out for a duration of three seconds. If the instrument cluster does not receive a message from the PCM within five seconds, the instrument cluster will illuminate the SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator and log a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).

  • An indicator is inoperative/always on - SERVICE ENGINE SOON
  • Circuitry.
  • Bulb.
  • Instrument cluster.
  • PCM.
  • GO to Pinpoint Test P .

PINPOINT TEST P: AN INDICATOR IS INOPERATIVE/ALWAYS ON - SERVICE ENGINE SOON CONDITIONS DETAILS/RESULTS/ACTIONS P1 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SERVICE ENGINE SOON INDICATOR ACTIVE COMMAND Trigger the HEC active command MIL.
  • Did the SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator illuminate?
Yes REFER to Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual.

No INSTALL a new instrument cluster; REFER to Instrument Cluster . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

1994 Chevrolet 2500 Trouble codes. I have a 94 Chevy 2500, it flashes error 3 across the dummy screen with the truck mileage. I hooked it up to a diagnostic code reader, I got the following codes: 12:...

DTC 12 -
When terminals "A" and "B" have been connected, the ignition switch turned to the "ON" position with the engine not operating, the MIL (Service Engine Soon) should flash DTC 12 three times consequently. This will be the following flash sequence: "flash, pause, flash-flash, pause, flash, pause, flash-flash, pause, flash, pause, flash-flash." DTC 12 indicates that the control module diagnostic system is operating properly. If DTC 12 is not indicated, and a fault is present within the diagnostic system itself, it should be addresses by consulting the appropriate diagnostic chart in this section.

The MIL (SES) will indicate a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) three times if a DTC is present, or it will simply continue to output DTC 12. If more than one DTC has been stored in the control module memory, the DTC(s) will be displayed from the lowest to the highest with each DTC being displayed three times.

DTC 32 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Error
EGR open command did not change the fuel mixture when the command was given during off idle operation. EGR opening should cause the mixture to be slightly richer because of the low oxygen content of the exhaust gas. EGR position signal is also monitored to verify EGR movement.

The EGR relies on a certain amount of exhaust back pressure to work properly. Now that you have lowered the back pressure, it can't work. Have you tried a new EGR valve? You may need a service manual with an EGR diagnostic chart to make sure, but I think the duals are the problem. Plus the O2 sensor is only looking at one side of engine instead of both.

Keep in midn this procedure to Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes:
To clear the DTC's from memory of the control module, either to determine if the malfunction will occur again or because the repair has been completed, the Tech 1 Scan Tool should be used to clear the DTC's. If a Tech 1 Scan Tool is not available the following must be perform'd when all repairs have been completed. This will allow all DTC's to be cleared:
1. Ignition "OFF."
2. Ground diagnostic terminal "A" to "B" of DLC (Data Link Connector).
3. Ignition "ON."
4. Fully apply brake pedal.
5.Fully apply accelerator pedal.
6. Check MIL (Service Engine Soon) for DTC 12.
7. Release brake pedal.
8. Release accelerator pedal.
9. Check MIL (Service Engine Soon) for DTC 12.
10. Turn ignition "OFF."
11. Remove Jumper from DLC connector.

NOTICE: To prevent control module damage, the key must be "OFF" when disconnecting or reconnecting module power.

Good luck.

Service engine soon light on, obd says egr valve

You should be fine. Usually what happens is when such a part causes the light to go on, the light will continue to come on again a few time after replacement of the part.

Simply disconnect the battery and let it sit for about 1minute (oat least 30 sec). Then reconnect the battery.

Drive the vehicle and if the light still comes one, take it to an auto parts dealer that can do a diagnostics test and ask them to clear the codes.

Even after this the light may come on - drive for about a week more and if it still stays on, then have the test done again and replace any other part that any codes may present faulty.

Otherwise, sometimes it itakes the computer and engine to adjust to the new part and get an accurate (consistant) reading until the light will stay off.

A lot of the time a light will come on if the O2 sensor(s) are bad. This isnt' a huge issue right aways, will slightly affect feul mileage and the amount of exhaust return into the engine for being reburned. Replace these if necessar (and if affordable).

Please let me know if you need any further assistance.

Check engine light comes on with codes PO401 & PO442 where these sensors are its a 1998 buick century

P0401 sets when EGR flow test runs and fails. EGR may be moving too slow or not at all. May be a bad connection.
P0442 sets when vacuum decay test indicates small leak in the EVAP system detected during diagnostic test. Check for a loose or defective gas-cap. If the cap is fine it may be a false code or could be related to another EVAP component.

I have an 88 S10 2.8L Auto trans. Stalling @ a stop

This system does not require the use of special diagnostic equipment for testing. A digital voltmeter with 10 megohm impedance, an ohmmeter capable of low level readings, a tachometer, test light, hand vacuum gauge and pump and jumper leads are required.

To extract a trouble code from the ECM for diagnostic purposes, the Assembly Line Communication Link (ALCL) connector, is used.

The ALCL diagnostic connector is located in the passenger compartment. Terminal B of the connector is the test terminal and terminal A is the ground used for diagnostic display.

If the test terminal is grounded with ignition on and engine not running, the system will enter the diagnostic mode. In this mode, the ECM will display a Code 12 three consecutive times by flashing the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light. A Code 12 consists of one flash, a short pause, then two flashes in rapid succession. After Code 12 is displayed, any stored trouble codes will be displayed three times each by flashing the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light, then Code 12 will be displayed again. In the diagnostic mode, the ECM will also energize all ECM controlled relays and solenoids.

After determining the trouble code(s), refer to "Trouble Code Identification."

If the test terminal is grounded with the engine running, the system will enter the field service mode. In this mode, the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light will indicate whether the system is in open or closed loop operation. If the system is in open loop operation, the light will flash approximately two and one-half times per second. Closed loop operation is indicated by the light flashing approximately once per second. In closed loop operation, the light will stay out most of the time if system is too lean and remain on most of the time if system is too rich.

Service engine code indicates EGR valve.

You could have a restriction in the egr ports. remove the valve. Plug the holes, start engine. 1 hole will be blowing out exhaust, the other will have large vacuum.

Service Engine Soon

Hi,

A couple of things you can try:
  • remove the negative battery terminal to reset your car's computer. There are some car stereos that would require a security code when the battery is removed;
  • on your next fill up, try if you can get a higher octane gas instead of your normal, say if you use to put in 91, shift temporarily to 95;
  • add a can of injector/carb cleaner in your gas tank;
  • on a long stretch, drive aggressively and hard. The idea is to clean your fuel system, combustion chamber, valves, exhaust manifold, catalytic converter, exhaust system including your EGR and O2 sensors.
If error indicator persist, trace the EGR wiring with special attention to the connectors at the ends.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.
