Starter motor just clicks, not cranking : knowledge question

Left car 2 months without starting it. Battery dead. With jumper cables, the starter motor at first just clicked, not turning over the engine. Finally, it sounded like it really did try to crank the engine, but could not quite do it, and went back to clicking. At first I thought there is a problem with the starter motor, then it almost started, so I wonder if the engine is seized up. Maybe, it is simpler. A better connection on the jump cables, which I will try and let everyone know. Meanwhile, anyone know off the top whether I have a problem with a seized engine or starter motor?

If the veh has been sitting and battery has been discharged expecially in freezing temps the battery will be ruined and will consume all amperage givin from jump veh set cables up and let charge for say 10 min with jump veh at high idle then retry starting if click is heard and no start check battery resistance connections at cables and retry

You mention it almost started which suggest the motor turned over... if it did that it's not seized. i would hook the jumpers on for about 15 minutes before you even attempt to start the car. if the starter still won't work... hit it with a hammer as you attempt to start it... if it starts up you likely need a new starter.

key turns no sound from starter.
does it click?
is dash warning lamp all glowing key on, they must, if not battery is dead, or battery lugs only corroded, (clean em?)
are head lamps dim or dead, turned on?
just it jumper cable crank, (AAA autotow style)

Crankshaft sensor - 97 Suzuki Swift. Need location.

can you afford a 10 buck walfart meter? DMM volt meter
the battery terms clean
fuses checked
starter dead, no jumper cables for a old car, its like first buy tool if ever there ways. huh>
so you cant jumper cable start car.
so we measure battery voltage cranking
11v good, hear clank, bad starter,
12.6v no clank is dead starter or dead keyline
hot wire key line, it cranks means key line DEAD.
try to crank in neutral? yet< A/t trans, this uses new switch contacts, wow it starts.?
lower than 10 v cranking is weak battery, no jumper cables, oops;.
or shorted starter, or seized engine, can you turn engine by hand.

my guess, is all this is too hard.
it takes tools to fix cars, some or are dirt cheap today.
unlike say in 1970 .... you in the good times.

Just replaced the starter on my 1996 Saturn. It started fine twice. The next morning I went to start in and it wouldn't start but it just kept clicking. I had to disconnect the battery to stop it. I don't...

must not have been the starter, huh?
there is no reason to guess. not at all.
if you have $10 volt meter from walfart you are deity like.
you got the power ! THE METER NEVER LIES !

is the battery voltage at 12.6vdc rested.? if NOT, (way low) its discharged, if below 12.6v.
charge the battery or better jumper cable start car.
does it jumper start now? a KEY TEST this is.
if cranks now, the battery is discharged. or bad.
if it dont , the hot wire the starter solenoid,
if it cranks now, the key line is dead.
if it dont crank now, good battery or jumper cable power. then
the starter is bad, the battery source is dead, bad battery cables.
cable ends loose or the engine is seized, if you can turn the engine over by hand (keys in pocket) then the engine is not seized.

these tests and tricks work on most cars, made

my car is a stick.
i can push start it
gravity start it.
jumper cable start it
and the normal way. car battery start it.
I can hot wire it.
with those ways, we can hone in on the true cause of NO CRANK.

My 96 pajero will not start at times

did you try to jumper cable start car?
that is a NO CRANK issue, no car starts (cept mine, its an M.T) with out the starter motor working, (mine can be push started or hill started)
Jumpers fix issue?, so bad/dead /discharged battery.
so????
so is the IMMO light showing IMMO blocking, , you ever read the operators guide and see IMMO rules>
lamp on, lamp off, lamp flashing... all have meanings.
the IMMO cuts fuel, not the starter,
so its not IMMO. Its a bad starter system. (it is a system of parts)

no crank has many causes. the tests are easy with a voltmeter.
a $20 volt meter can save you the cost of a $140 battery.

It can be a free fix. (clean the battery lugs yet>?) ask how.
to start the engines (assume engine is ok and EFI ok, and spark ok)
the start system can fail like this.

1: A dead battery ,bad bat., or only discharged, a voltmeter solves this riddle. (ask how)
if only discharged, then charge it. and find cause of discharge ,1st or it will repeat.
the order here, counts.
2: bad battery to starter cables.
3: bad starter solenoid, or starter. we hot wire IT.(ask)

(fails? , bad starter, assumes battery side is good, first)
hot wire fails.
I hit the starter casing with a hammer bam, it now works.

4: starter cranks hot wired. it's good. (test passes so i then find the bad KEY line. cause,,, we now have problem cut in half.

5: the KEY line is that wire that runs from KEY (ST) to the starter , small wire.
on an A/.T car, (auto/trans) car, the key line passes thru the
PRNDL switch on tranny. so wiggle the gear shift. cranks now>?
try cranking in Neutral. some cars allow this, and
the Neutral side of the switch will like new, and car cranks.

that was the long answer.
here is the short.
Take it in. call the auto club.
guess, i guess,?
1: left head lights on.
2: battery lugs never cleaned.
3: battery died.

The acr would not start. Battery works. I banged

If you banged on the starter motor and it started then you have a stickie bendix drive and solinoid sticking
But if you have to also jump start it as well then do this.....When it wont start before doing anything else turn on the lights and hit the starter and if the lights go dim or go out the battery is no good or you have a short in the eletc ...so take battery lead off for 2 days and if starts you have a SHORTin the eletrics
