I have 1998 vw golf timing belt broke put a belt on it and check timing and it is in time but will not start could val be bent

Most likely the valves are bent, VW engines are interference engines. Send the head to a reputable engine shop and have it thoroughly checked over. Make sure you replace the head bolts, they are not reusable.

There's a "buzzing" sound whenever I open my driver door (on my 2008 vw golf city) for the first time. Is this normal??

Yes, it's just the car anticipating it might be started . The system primes the fuel system before you turn the key receiving the signal from your door lock mechanism so it would always start at the first try. The sound comes from the bottom right near the fuel tank. All VW's do this.

Replaced the timing belt on a 1990 VW Golf and now it won't start but it will turn over

Most likely the timing is way off. The engine will start when it is in time and when it is 180 degrees out of time. The timing marks on the cam and the crank will line up correctly once when it is #1 TDC and once when it is 180 degrees out of time. The problem happens when you have the Crank at #1 TDC as it should be and the cam is set incorrectly in most cases. If both valves on the head for the #1 are not closed with the intake open and the exhaust closed for the next cylinder in the firing order your cam is not set correctly even though the timing mark appears to be correct. If the previous timing belt broke while the engine was running odds are every valve will need to be replaced because they are bent. VW did not use a no contact engine in this year model which would have locked the valves in the closed position if the belt broke. If this in fact the case you can verify this by doing a compression check on the cylinders. If you have 0 compression on any cylinders you have bent valves. You can also attach an air compressor to a compression check hose and apply air pressure to each cylinder, if you don't get pressure in the cylinder the valves are either bent or not closing properly.

Where is the thermostat located on golf v1 1999 1.6,car been standing 6 months worked fine now water not circulating!!!!!!

Heed of antifreeze coolant temperature!!!
First time you might check the thermostat operating.
The thermostat location for VW Golf 1.6 is inside of coolant thermostat housing placed on back side of the cylinder head. See pictures below.
Thermostat checking:
1. Cold engine. Start up the engine and watch of the water temp indicator. After first value 60 Celsius Degree you still warm up the engine until the lifter (pointer) reach 80 C deg. (second mark after 60 C deg.). At this time you let engine running at idle speed and check with your hand the thermostat plastic housing and hose temperature in bottom left side of the engine. Heed of alternator driving belt and ventilator fan !!!
2. If the thermostat is good the hose must be cold until the water temp indicator reach almost 90 C deg.
3. The thermostat opening temperature is 87 C deg.
4. If the hose is already warm the thermostat is out of order.

Thermostat location, Part number: 032121110B, in german - "Kuehlregle" (Price around $20):

Important note: Always replace the thermostat round seal, position 6 in the above picture.
