Ive had the same problem. You have a vacuum leak or the EGR is clogged with carbon. The best solution would be to look for leaks around the breather and vacuum hoses. For the EGR just remove it and clean the gunk out. Im giving this info asuming that your dodge is a 90-97 or so.

My 1998 dakota would die for no reason when trying to restart i would smell gas after a 2 or 4 tries it would start and run fine. then it would start to die and i would work the gas petal and it would back...

YEAH... I TRIED ALL that TOO...

Hello Tim Carson,

Finally I got codes read... and it said the OXYGEN SENSORS were complaining... OBD... DTC
(on-board-diagnostic... DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES)

So... of course I changed the... OXYGEN SENSORS.

The "NEW" OXYGEN SENSORS complained just as well...

I have subsequently learned the "SENSORS" are
just doing their job...

In my case reporting on a collapsed catalytic converter.
(muffler is actually a MORE common blockage).

A little hunting around... like Auto-Zone ... Napa auto...
Pep-boys... O'Reilly Auto Parts... even MIDAS might
yield FREE READINGs... (check around).

Just remember to wear your best SALES RESISTANCE...

and look up you prices on ROCKAUTO...

I have a 91 Buick Century that dies after a few minutes.

Fuel or ignition problem? Right after it dies, check for spark at a plug. A bad coil will often work till it's warmed up, then fail. If you still have ignition spark after it dies, or if it starts right up again, then it's something else.
Check the fuel pressure to make sure it's at proper pressure. Also scan the computer for any trouble codes that are related. It's easy on your car if you understand how the flashing light translates to two-digit number codes. Use a wire or paperclip to bridge terminals A and B of the diagnostic test connector protruding out from bottom of dash. It's a 12 pin connector. A and B are the two upper right terminals on it. Now turn key on and the check engine light will begin blinking the codes. Code 12 is diagnostic mode-one blink, pause, pause, blink, pause blink. See? 22 would be blink, pause, blink, pause, pause, blink, pause, blink. See? 33 would be three blinks, short pause and then 3 rapid blinks. (I"m going blink crazy!) Well, get the codes-they are two digit codes, and will keep repeating, lower numbers first and in succession, over and over while in diagnostic mode. Maybe an idle sensor fault will show up.
Good luck.

When 1993 dodge caravan is driven awhile, It sometimes will not

idle is set at factory but if the idle air control valve is bad it won't idle right also if the throttle position sensor is not working right it won't idle right a diagnostic scan should be able to determine which one is needed.

I have a 2002 montero sport and i've changed the alternator and battery and now when i start the truck it works fine but when i get to a stop light or stop sign the truck will die out on me, it starts with...

Two areas to consider are the MAP sensor and the Idle Control Valve, both pricey items for your vehicle. I'd go to a local autoparts chain and see if they can run a free diagnostic test for you. The codes will point you in the right direction.

i have an 02 silverado and i had the same type of issue! wound up being a short in a wire running over the gas tank that operates the fuel pump! it would start fine and then it would die! and not start back! then it would start! take it to the dealer and have them check it - however diagnostics will not show a problem unless they can duplicate it!! hope this helps

ENGINE DIES AT RANDOM.

have you replaced oxygen sensors they can cause this as it may read improper fuel in the exhaust, also try throttle posistioning sensor, also MAP sensor but to make sure you should have your car diagnosed by a shop with OBDI diagnostics, or you can purchase scanner fairly cheap your self its fairly easy, and for price of scanner you could come ot cheaper then a repair shop charges to scan it. Also there is a self diagnostic chapter in repair manuals that is called troubleshooting section also contains codes and methods of diagnostics.
