Question about 1990 Nissan 300ZX

1 Answer

Starter/fly-wheel grinds every once in a great while on my 1990 Nissan 300zx non-turbo. I have had this problem since I bought the car. The starter on the car was not too bad when I just bought the car, but over time it got worse. So I changed it my-self. But the problem still presisted, and then I changed it again! But still I had problems. So I changed it one more time... and it was fine for about 2 weeks. But still every once in a great while(15-40 starts) it'll grind. Now at this point I look like a ******* kid who can't do anything right. But I check the fly-wheel, no missing teeth. I also had the last starter checked before I put it in, it was fine. So I had it "looked" at (Visual inspection) at a shop. Everything looked tight and sounded fine. So whats the problem? Just my luck of alot of bad starters?

How to change flywheel on 1990 300zx non turbo?

pull the transmission. remove the torque converter (automatics) or clutch and pressure plate (standards), the bolts for the flywheel are under that. make sure you replace the flywheel with the proper one especially if it's a standard.

Your Friction disk (clutch) is worn out. Have it replaced....might also need pressure plate, but not necessarily.

Nissan 300zx no reverse or 4th gear.

Hi,
The first place I would look is the shift linkage for wear and a sloppy connection from wear.
adjustments may be made as a possible fix on the linkage rod.
Glad to be of assistance - Please rate the response - I can learn from your rating. Thank you

I assume this is an automatic transmission. Is it a twin turbo or a non-turbo model? It sounds like you've lost fourth gear and are stuck in 3rd - those RPM would be about right. If you can provide more information, it will probably help in the diagnosis.
