Fuel Pump needs replacing with a full tank of gas on my '97 Chrysler Concorde

I need to replace my fuel pump on my 1997 Chysler Concorde, and read on wikianswers.com that it's located under the floorboard accessible through a hatch, and it's in the gas tank or something. I need to know how to replace it entirely -the fuel pump that is. My local mechanic said it would cost up to $400 to repair it for me and I haven't been able to start working on it 1.) I haven't found the part for the car yet, and 2.) I have a full tank of gas and it holds 25-35 gallons of gasoline.

I doubt their is an access to the fuel pump threw floor board MABY in trunk the proper procedure would be this 1. Get the part 2. Disconnect neg. batt termanal 3. Drain the tank (fuel pumps like to quit on a full tank for some reason). 4. disconnect filler neck, fuel lines and wire harness (you may have to lower tank a little to get the lines and harness) 5. remove support straps 6. Lower tank 7. clean off top of tank where the pump comes out. 8. using a brass punch or something non sparking remove the lock holding pump assembly in tank. 9. carefully!! remove pump. 10. install new strainer on new pump and install. you might buy a new filter as well as most new pumps require this for warrenty on the ground with hand tools this can be done in aprox 3-4 hours!!

There is an axcess panel in the trunk for the fuel pump once off you will be able to remove the pump. it comes out the top so the fuel in the tank wont be a problem just be careful when working with fuel.

2001 crystler town & country fuel pump

The Fuel pump is in the tank. The only thing I disagree with in emissionwiz post is whether to drain the tank or not. Chrysler started putting drains on the tanks in 2000 to make this easier when they went to a plastic fuel tank. I would drain the tank from the drain, disconnect the wiring then drop the tank to replace the pump. This all assumes that you verified that the fuse in the interior panel is not blown and the fuel pump relay in the power distribution box under the hood is still good.

Fuel pump is bad. need to replace it. do i need an eletcric fuel pump or a regular fuel pump..i hve a 2002 chrysler sebring conv. LX 2.7L

All vehicles with fuel injection use a high-pressure pump mounted inside the gas tank. This is virtually all vehicles built since about 1990. I don't know about this particular vehicle, some have an access panel above the tank that allows you to remove the pump without dropping the tank, others don't. Dropping a nearly full tank of gas is no easy task. Try asking your auto parts store or the Chrysler parts counter if this car has such an access panel.

By the way, the pump is immersed in the fuel, and uses the fuel to cool the pump. Never let your tank get below 1/4 full to reduce overheating of the pump, which shortens its life. Occasionally is OK, but running below 1/4 tank on a regular basis will cut the life of the pump significantly.
