Question about 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Alternator on 2001 VW Passat 1.8 Turbo?

The alternator went out on our Passat when we were 3 hours from home. We had it towed back home, and the car place just called and quoted us $650 for a new alternator and battery!!! I just looked at AutoZone, and I can get both plus the belt for around $260. My question is, is the alternator a pretty easy fix on this car? Can I get to it easily?
Thanks for your help!!

When i start my 2001 vw passat and start to drive warning alternator workshop comes on then turns off right away. Would this have anything to do with turbo not kicking in right away?

doubt it, charges the battery so its an electrical fault if you have a multi meter test the battery voltage with the engine running should be around 13.8

Brake light and battery lights are on in a 2006 nissan quest

This just happened to us. While driving the Brake and Battery light went on. These signs do point to the alternator not charging. Eventually car wouldnt accelerate. What happened is that our alternator belt fell off. 5 hours after being towed belt was changed and we drove off... turn on the a/c and loud squeal! Turn off a/c and its gone. Back at the shop were told the a/c unit seized somewhere causing the alternator belt to snap while we were driving down the highway (Apparently they share a pulley or something.. still gotta look that up as soon as we get back home) Both lights went on because the alternator wasnt charging. Cant turn on a/c for the rest of the trip or were stranded for hours again. Check ur belts, pullies, a/c unit and test alternator.. hope this helps u guys

Is 475.00 reasonable for alternator/repair for 2001 VW Passat?

well the list price for the alternator alone is well over 300 dollars, so i guess if i were to spend that much on an alternator i would want to spend the money to pay someone who knows what they are doing to install it.

on a regular, non-german, car a rebuilt alternator can be had for less than a hundred, a new one for less than two hundred, and a hundred for labor would do it.

you do not buy those cars in order to save money on anything related to initial price, operation, maintenance, or repair.

Hi there well done for a great job right my vw sharan 2001 tdi curently is not heating and the water from the engine is not hot when you touch on the pipes they are just warm however the heater gage...

First time you might check the thermostat operating.

Heed of antifreeze coolant temperature!!!

The thermostat location for 2001 VW Sharan 1.9 TDI is on back of the alternator at the bottom side of the bracket.

IMPORTANT NOTE: It is NOT necessary to replace the alternator if you want to change the thermostat !!!

Thermostat checking:
1. Cold engine. Start up the engine and watch of the water temp indicator. After first value 60 Celsius Degree you still warm up the engine until the lifter (pointer) reach 80 C deg. (second mark after 60 C deg.). At this time you let engine running at idle speed and check with your hand the thermostat plastic housing and hose temperature in bottom left side of the engine. Heed of alternator driving belt and ventilator fan !!!
2. If the thermostat is good the hose must be cold until the water temp indicator reach almost 90 C deg.
3. The thermostat opening temperature is 87 C deg.
4. If the hose is already warm the thermostat is out of order.

Thermostat location, Part number: 044121113, in german - "Kuehlregle" (Price around $25):

Important note: Always replace the thermostat seal, position 7 in the above picture.

I need to replace the alternator on my 2003 VW passat 6cyl. I took it to a shop that said that VW is there specialty. The price for the labor and alternator almost did me in. just trying to see if I was...

prices of the alternators on line range any where from $150 to$ 380
Labor wise shouldn't take more than 2hr to R&R remove and replace This is a ball park figure

How do I replace an alternator on a 2000 VW Passat 1.8T. How hard is it to replace?

it isnt that hard actually

disconect positive battery terminal. and feel the tension on the laternator belt. you will need to bring it back to this tension.

1.) loosen bolts holding alternator in place (LOOK AT THE BELT TO REMEMBER HOW IT GOES, BEST NOT REMOVE THE BELT.)

2.) loosen bolts holding wires to alternator and connect wires to new alternator

3.) Place alternator in engine, replace bolts but dont tighten

4.) put belt in place, it will be slack, use your tire iron or a piece of pipe or wood to pry the alternator back, to bring tension on the belt. You pry the alternator to pull the belt as TIGHT AS POSSIBLE. while holding strain, on it, tighten the bolts.

2003 VW Passat "Oil Press, Turn Off Engine" and "STOP" Light

I would check the oil pressure sensor and the oil pump itself. You can take the sensor out and use a mechanical gauge to check the oil pressure. If the oil pressure is within specs, you need a new sensor, if not, you need a new pump.
