Question about 1996 Jaguar Vanden Plas

1 Answer

How to get my car's starter to remove it?

I've got a 1996 Jaguar Vanden Plas and I'd like to know how to get to the starter in that vehicle, so I can save myself a couple of bucs and remove it myself to give it to repair. Thanks!

It's more complicated than I thought it would be, I'll need to tow her to the mechanic after all. But thanks anyway!

Here is the procedure from the factory service manual:

Open the engine compartment and fit paintwork protection sheets.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Remove the battery cover.
  2. Place the vehicle on a ramp.
  3. Working from below the vehicle, remove the power steering rack for access.
  4. Disconnect the starter motor main terminal. Reposition the rubber boot from the main terminal. Remove the nut from the starter motor main terminal. Disconnect the main cable from the terminal.
  5. Disconnect the starter motor solenoid terminal. Reposition the rubber boot from the terminal. Remove the nut from the solenoid terminal. Disconnect the cable from the terminal.
  6. Remove the starter motor securing bolts. Remove the upper securing bolt. Preferably, use a short 13 mm spanner or a Snap On Half Moon spanner CMX1113 to initially loosen the bolt. (Refer to the next step). Remove the lower securing bolt. Carefully remove the starter motor.
  7. The upper bolt may be removed (after loosening) using a 3/8' square drive 13 mm socket, extensions and U.J as shown.

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Tighten the starter motor securing bolts to 35-48 Nm.
  2. Refit the steering rack as detailed in Operation 57.10.01. Refill the reservoir with the recommended fluid and bleed the steering system
  3. Lower the ramp. Remove the protection sheets and close the engine compartment cover.
  4. Connect the battery and fit the battery cover. Reset the radio information and the clock.

Here you can purchase service manual.

Check also the starter solenoid and starter relay , see here:Engine Will Not Crank Checklist.

Here the part.

I'm Changing the boot on steering rack ,Do the whole steering rack comes down ,or can I just change boot

Just remove the track rod end and lock nut, counting the turns on removal, otherwise you will alter the tracking,
Remove and renew gator and refit track rod end with new locking nut.
It is possible an oil leak from the rack seal has been primary cause of gator failure? have you noticed power steering fluid loss?
If so you require an exchange S/rack.
Good Luck!

1996 Jaguar Vanden Plas. Problem: having trouble with vibration and noise on speeds between 30 and 35 mph. no vibration on lower or higher speeds. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Balancing the tires is the typical solution but your case sounds like it might be a bent wheel. Take your car to a tire shop to have them check for balance. While on the balancing machine, they can inspect the rim for a warped rim. Make sure you let them know prior to the wheel getting mounted on the balancing machine. Jags are known for that to happen. I hope it is just a tire balancing but if it is a bent wheel, the cost is more. Good luck.
