Question about 1997 Isuzu Trooper
I have an Isuzu Trooper(1997) 3.2lL LS 6-cyllinder with 167k miles on it and for a while i've had a clicking/knocking noise coming from the engine. I took it to the mechanic and he said it was a problem with the lifters and that they would have to be replaced. Because i had to replace my spark plugs anyways i asked one of the people at Auto Zone and they said that most likely it was just one of the oil rockers that was misaligned. I'm just wondering if there is some way i can verify and/or fix myself instead of just shelling out a few hundred bucks. One thing which may or may not be of use is that the sound doesn't always have the same volume, or frequency, when it is louder it also seems to be faster ( the frequency of the clicks also increases with RPMs ) thanks, -Christophe
Classic Trooper problem. You can get a lot of quiet(er) troublefree miles out of your Trooper with religious, regular oil changes. Isuzu is now advising the use of Mobil 1 0w30 synthetic motor oil, changed at 5000 mi intervals to quiet the lifter tapping that you're experiencing. If you're a DIYer, you can pick up 5qt jugs of this oil at Walmart for $23-$26. -Or, you can buy the basic oil change and provide your own Mobil 1 0w30 to the tech to keep the costs down.
It'll take 150-300 miles for the noise to settle down after the fresh oil change. Keep a close eye on your oil dipstick. As soon as you're coming close to a quart low, top it back up. The 3.2l motor will start tapping again when the oil level drops or is near the time to change. Forget the advice about the belt tensioner needing to be replaced. That is rarely the source of the noise. I have two Troopers, Christophe. They're the ones that aren't tapping like crazy at the traffic light. Enjoy your Troop. -Geoff

I have a 1994 trooper w/148k miles. I have notice this since 1994 but the dealer did not found any problem. No mechanic but my self haved work on my Trooper. Isuzu just ignores you!.
Just change your oil to mobil ( regular or Synt.) oil, down here will be 10W40. I haved try all kind of oil but later they all started to fail my test...Gastrol, Quaker, Pensoil, Texaco, Esso and valvoline. No I am not a Mobil Fanatic. You want to waste hard earn money? go a head buy another oil. Ever since Mobil havent fail me. Buy mobil 5000 0r 7500 miles oil. please send me if it did actually work on your Trooper. Ed.
