What is the smell and does it have to be fixed?

After driving my Lexus 300 something smells like rubber burning under the hood. Had oil changed and they said there is no oil leak. Can you give me some ideas - is it dangerous?

A burning rubber smell under the hood might be just that - consider having your accessory drive belt inspected, as it is possible that a bearing in one of the accessories (alternator, power steering pump, air conditioning compressor, etc.) or in the tensioner mechanism might be failing. This sort of fault will often cause that particular accessory bearing to spin less freely than the others, and as a result the belt continues to pass over the associated pulley at the same speed as the engine. Essentially, the result is similar to a car spinning its tires on dry pavement - and a similar 'burning rubber' odor is the friction and heat of the rubberized belt.

If the odor is more like burning oil than burning rubber, the rear valve cover gasket is situated in a place that results in dripping oil, even small and unnoticable amounts, onto the exhaust manifold that is directly underneath the valve cover.

These two items might be places to start your inquiry. Best of luck to you!

I have a 98 town car after 10-20 mins of driving it starts smelling like burning rubber from the inside i checked under the hood and there's no smell at all any ideas on what it is.

Check the tires they may be rubbing against something. Drive it until you get the smell then pull over and feel the back of each tire, if its hot you know which tire is causing the problem.

You might want to look at all the hot surfaces under the hood. it sounds like something made of plastic is touching something hot.

There's a Rubber burning smell coming from under

check your alternator, power steering or air conditioning belts, unless you picked up whilst driving from the road any plastic bag onto the exhaust pipe and stuck and melts on it.

When driving i can smell gas in my 2000 lexus es300

possibly your O rings which isolates fuel injectors from engine block are getting old and letting gasoline go out. it is very dangerous since it can cause fire. do not drive.

another cause is broken loose or cracked fuel lines. this is equally dangerous since it is under hood close to hot exhaust manifold.

if smell is from exhaust manifold, which means not the smeel of gasoline but exhaust fumes, this can be caused by broken exhaust manifold or a crack on it or problematic exhaust manifold gasket.

White smoke comes out from front hood of car and little bit rubber smell.

your accessory belts are slipping and burning, producing smoke. Get them checked right away before they brake and your alternator does not charge the batt. When this happens you will eventually be stranded.
