Question about Ford F-150

I have a 2005 Ford F150 5.4 misfire when put on the snap-on scanner. Injectors are not the problem (no misfires). I have replaced three coils, that when unplugged, did not fire. For about 3 days this seemed to solve the problem, then it once again started to run bad, but not as bad as before.

Hi jenniferhoxs,
Misfire is a common problem. There might be millions of reasons for the same. It's not possible for us to discuss each and every aspect as we cannot see the model and as it would take more than a month to discuss everything.
Still, we can go for basic causes that might help you to fix the issue.
Main reason might be defect EGR sensor.
1.. Check or replace plugs and plug wires 2. Ingnition coil (there's 2) going bad 3. Vacuum leak which messes up the air flow. There is definitely a defect in the air intake which has tech service bulletins out on it. The seals go bad and need replaced which requires removing upper and lower air intake manifolds and replacing seals and bolts.
A misfire code can be many things, ignition, a bad injector, valves, vacuum leak, or anything that controls spark and fuel inje

Hope that would help you to fix this.
If unable to find any of the causes, i would advise you to get in touch with a tech. I know its frustrating but the above mentioned are the main causes. Other than this, a serious concern.
Thanks for using Fixya.
Do rate the solution.

Check wiring from ignition to the coils, probably there is a bad contact in there. If wiring are fine then it can be a bad ignition lock.

Hi I picked up a 2002 a ford excursion with a misfire computer says ignition coil so I did that replaced all 8 and plugs sill still has misfire engine has 117.000 miles on it and put a fuel filter

misfires are also from problem injectors and low fuel pressure
the code would have stated which cylinder was misfiring to identify the injector at fault
read the codes again and post the code found

P0012 Bank 1 Timing Over Retarded

P0022 Bank 2 Timing Over Retarded

There the codes

Look at scan tool data

I would say the actuators were not lined up

correctly when the motor was built, or the chain

timing took place

Misfire in number 3 and number 4 cylinders

Misfire is not always from coil. It could be from spark pug wire and injector.
Solution:
-Test the injector at the misfire cylinder. Is it within specification...?
No.>>> The injector is bad. Replace new one.
Yes. the injectors are good and within its specification.
-Check the plug wire. it might be broken and spark to ground or too much resistant. If so replace it.

Scanner says problem with coil b, misfire

there are thre two wires per coil and if it's a 6 cylinder then it has that many if it's an 8 it has four. So it would be the middle coil looking from the from of the car looking at the pack, and they have it markedon them as well. Buy Only FORD coil do not buy after market unless your going to sell it.
