If it spun you will probably have to take the crank and have it machined or it will spin again

take another cap off and read the size
what you are doing is a short cut to costly repairs as a spun bearing usually requires a new con rod as well as bearings

Your shop manual should have this info. Don't have one? You need one if you are doing this major work. Wht trust some stranger with such critical spec's?

Chances are you might have spun a main bearing with the coolant in the oil for some time. With a main bearing spun, no oil will curculate thus seizing your engine. Do the lights dim when trying to crank?

Bearing oil clearance and new size bearing


Is the shaft a perfect shape, if a bit out, it will fail straight away as the hardened coating is now missing. Use Engineers Blue and check the shaft.

No the oil clearance is correct for BOTH bearings @ .022 -.046 mm to try to get a true clearance measurement use a micrometer and measure in 4 places 90 degrees part this will check for out of round journal and compare to a factory journal size. there may be a .001 thousand or .002 thousand undersize bearing insert that will bring oil clearance in to specs. but most connecting rods get black from a spun bearing and they need to stay round so a inside micrometer is used to check that 10 times out 10 the connecting rod is replaced.

remove spark plugs and try to turn the crank by hand with a large 1/2 drive ratchet. if it doesnt turn smoothly then theres an issue. there are many reasons that could cause it to seize, most probable is oil pump failure, spun bearing, low oil level, or really old oil. or possably abusing the engine

What is the difference between standard size main bearing and oversize main bearing. Which is best for the 5.4L V8 engine


thats a good un? ok standard bearings are a standard size,,,over size bearings are smaller in the center to make up for the metal that has been removed from when the bearing was re-fased
ie: ground down to smooth it off so its flat again,,,,,now you can fit oversized bearings on a standerd bearing becouse they would be far to tight and would lock the bearing up,,,,so you need to re-grind the bearing serfice or fit standerd bearings back in,,,only if the shaft is a good one?

Uhh there are no rods in the head. That dealer has a loose rod in his head maybe.
The crank, rods and pistons are all in the bottom end of the engine.
What it likely is is either a broken piston skirt or a spun rod bearing.
Spun crank bearings are rare and sound deep.
A spun rod bearing can be fairly quiet on idle depending how bad it is worn out, but it will be really loud on acceleration. Piston slap from a broken skirt can be pretty loud too but it mostly sounds like diesel rattle only a bit less. Some have described it as a loud pinging sound like detonation.
Drain the oil and check for metal debri. If you can tilt the vehicle a bit for the oil to drain more towards the drain hole that could help. Then look for metal pieces and judge their size. There should be NO glitter whatsoever in engine oil, or any kind of debri. Now a rear end or transmission is different. Those always have a little metalic sheen to them.

95 f250 wont start, good battery, tried to jump. When tryin to jump had some power but when truned the key over the starter started for a second then there was no power. Hooked a equal sized new battery up...


typically you will loose all power to EVERYTHING when in the crank/start position

this is a god thing because you want all the power going to the starter

if you have not replaced the starter solenoid mounted on the fender do that next... its only like $20

otherwise you need to know how to do volt-drop testing to further diagnose possible electrical concerns

However, before spending another dollar try this...
remove some or all the spark plugs

install the correct size socket on the bolt inside the crankshaft pulley and use a breaker bar and try to turn the engine over by hand

you could have a spun bearing

I have a spun rod bearing, and a scored crank


Talk to an engine rebuild shop near you. They should be able to save your crank if it's not broken, and get you a set of bearings and piston or anything else you need. They'll be in the Yellow pages.
