What is the quickest and easist way to replace the alternator and put the serpintine belt back on?

The alternator is going bad. It will start if you dont let it set for to long but overnight it drains the battery. I turned the car on and removed the positive cable on the battery and the car dies. What is the easiest way to replace the alternator and put the serpintine belt back on?

I have the same problem with my 96 Buick, but the directions are wrong on this page my car uses a special tool to get the tension off the belt, and its not a 1/2breaker bar. If it is than its one i have not seen. It has a small whole on top of the tensioner for something to slide pressure. ive replaced the alternator on a Buick regal before and this is not the same type of tensioner.

With the belt off, try to spin each pulley that spins and see if there is any roughness or flat spots on the bearings that you can detect with your hands.

Usually, the bearings on Alternators or idler pulleys go bad before the a/c because the a/c should have oil in it. However, it could be any of the pulleys that the belt spins on.

It can be a process of elimination of changing parts until the sound goes away, if you can't detect it under free spinning conditions with the belt off.

Picture diagram to show me how to put the belt back on

Tony,
If your serpintine belt fell off, and it is not broken, you have a much bigger problem then you think.
Before puttin a new belt on, check all pulleys, Power steerin, alternator, AC,Belt tensioner, waterpump The AC may or may not move ,
If one of those units don't move, don't put the belt on till you replace that which didn't move

Put new alternator on now at idle with a/c on while in gear terrible noise somewhere around serpintine belt area.put it in neutral or park and noise stops.same time this started the driverside a/c zone...

replacing the alternator and removing the belt and tensioner may have caused a problem with the a/c compressor and bearings , when you replaced the alternator did you replace the belt and tensioner if so it may have added enough pressue on the a/c bearings to cause the problem , if you didn't replace them it the a/c clutch bearing may be bad

Alternator

First you need to remove the serpintine belt or alternator belt. If it is a serpintine locate the tension pully(the one that doesn't look like it does anything) place a wrench over the pully bolt and pull while removing the belt. Most generaly all alternators have two bolts holding them in. Remove both bolts. and remove alternator on some vehicles you need to remove the top engine mounts to remove the acctual alternator. make sure you if you do this you put a jack under the bngine block. NEVER ON THE OIL PAN. After that simply remove the old alternator and replace it with the new one reinstall the serpintine belt as instructed on either the underside of your hood or where the hood latch is.
