Question about 1999 Ford Ranger SuperCab

1 Answer

I have a 99 ranger, when I switch it into 4hi or 4low the light stays on and I can hear the shift motor on the transfer case clicking but it wont engage the 4x4. I have no idea how to troubleshoot the problem and need advice. I'm on disability and can't afford to take it to a shop but must have the 4x4 to get up my driveway. Yes it's that bad of a driveway. Any advice as to how I can diagnose the problem would be very helpfull. If I can answer any questions needed to figure this out please ask and I'll try to answer them.

Did you know that you have to back up 50ft. to completely lock in your hubs. Not doing this and using the 4wd regularly will wear out the gears and make a clicking sound like a cv joint going out. Well, because that's kind of what's happening.

2007 chevy trailblazer won't go into 4 wheel drive

Have you had codes checked ? While connected to a good scanner that will check transfer case switch to show if switch is working, and it could be the switch on the side of the transmission.

My 99 blazer wont shift into 4hi, 4low, or auto. Tried switching the electric switch on dash but that didnt solve the problem.

Hi, the transfer case control modle can store fault codes, which can lead you to your issue. These would have to be read at a repair facility, Something you can do, is disconnect the battery, as this may reset the module, and allow the system to function.Good luck...Coop

Wont shift into 4 wheel drive

Check the fuse to the 4x4, if the fuse is good then check the 4x4 electric motor actuator on the transfer case. You should hear it work from 2wd, 4hi to 4low and back to 2wd with the push of the switch. if you don't hear it working then check the wire harness at the actuator motor, look for any damages like corrosion or cracked wire connector clips. If the 4x4 actuator is working on the transfer case, then the front hub 4x4 actuator may have gone bad and that's located on the front differential. It's common for the clip there to corrode and break and is an easy fix with a new collar pin, at worst it's the diaphragm on the vacuum actuator that is located under the battery tray. There is a vacuum switch on the top of the transfer case, driver side but when that fails, your front hub stay's locked in the on position. Good luck and keep me posted and hope it's a simple fuse that has gone bad. You can pick up all these parts at Auto Zone or Parts Source and they will have the step by step instructions for you to get the job done with common tools.

02 dakota wont shift from 4hi to 2 hi

Try commanding the drive ranges while in netural cycling them. This may normalize the controller that senses the position from the encoder motor assembly. There maybe a procedure for that in a service manual.

Need vacuum diagram for 4-wheel drive

the 4x4 don't use vacuum. the front is auto lock when the transfer is engauged with the button. if the light don't which when pressed into 4hi or 4low. the motor on the transfer case maybe hung up. they have to be used at least 4 times a year not to go bad. the motor is on the back side of the transfer case. best of luck.

94 Sonoma 4x4 won;t lock into 4WD.

yea its not shifting again like before ? sounds like your transfer case solonoid has possably gone bad again .. these are a sometimes dont work item .. It is what shifts the transfer case into gear and it might be a little worn or weathered and not letting the switch kick it in gear all the way from the N position. thanks Jerry holler if you need more.
