Question about 1992 Buick Roadmaster

1 Answer

A ticking noise in the dash, near speedometer, once underway, does not very with speed.

Once the wagon is underway, there is a ticking noise coming from behind the speedometer or to the left of it. It DOES NOT go faster or slower no matter what the speed. And it seldom goes away even during a 3 or 4 hour trip. What's up?

Probably the speedometer cable needs to be removed and lubricated.

Ticking sound

I have a 300SL and I encountered a similar problem. My dash lights were not coming on, the car was not starting and there was a ticking noise coming from the passenger side(near airbag) when I was trying to start the engine. I noticed that my ignition switch was slightly getting loose. There is an adjustable cover around the ignition key ( like one inch wide) that can be easily tighten by hand. The purpose of this cover is to hold the ignition in the proper place for the electrical contact. It also has a few marks on it which show you if it is properly aligned. By adjusting it to the proper spot, I was able to fix the problem and the car starts just fine right now. Sometime (once in 6 months) it gets loose again and I have to re-tighten it, but it only takes 5 seconds to do so. It seems like the ignition switch is very sensitive on these cars and the smallest misalignment of the switch can make the car not start.
I hope this helps.

Did you check your tires for something embeded in the tread? A screw or nail maybe a bolt.

These lights for the dash are controlled by a rheostat instrument control dimmer switch next to the main light switch for the headlights, it is either turned off (have seen this dozens of times) or it is defective. Below is a picture of the switch assembly I speak of. The thumb wheel next to the knob is the dimmer control.

There is a clicking sound coming from underneath the dash on the drivers side, more when the car is moving slowly than quickly and more accelerating and decelerating than when moving at a steady speed

1st find out if your speedometer is cable driven, some manufacturers have electronic driven speedos. If it is cable driven you should probably lube the cable. If not find a close to empty parking lot and have someone put their head under the dash and listen to see if they can narrow down noise. PLEASE keep in mind Sound travels very well in vehicles! I once had a squeek in the dash that sounded just like it was behind the register only to find out it was a dry latch spring lever that just needed some grease! Out under the hood latch up in front of the radiator.
