Chevy Cavalier 2001 ABS Brake problem

I have had terrible brake problems since I bought the 2001 chevy cavalier, had brakes replaced 4 times...last yr replaced rotor and pads for $500 bucks...now my ABS light is on with the repair wrench service symbol, also my "Trac off" light is on...the brakes pulsate, stick and also slide when I put the brakes on, very hard to describe (not just when it's raining...scary
Any advice is greatly appreciated on how to deal with this...I also had the ABS lights reset and they went back on....the problem is getting worse. I don't want to pay a lot to fix this but want to be safe driving.

thanks!!

I have similar problems with my 1998 cavalier. I have had to replace my brake pads more often than normal. I replaced the caliper, and still had the same problem. I also had problems with the ABS lights coming on for no apparent reason, even after resetting them. I ended up having to replace the ABS relay and wheel speed senor wiring which solved the problems for awhile, but was a spendy repair at the mechanic. The relay has since gone out again, and this is considered a frequent problem for 1998 cavaliers according to MSN autos.

Here's what they have under brake reliability for your 2001 model:
"An occasional problem on this vehicle is the failure of the Wheel Speed Sensor Wiring. The cost to repair the Wheel Speed Sensor Wiring is estimated at $117.00 for parts and $32.50 for labor. All prices are estimates based on $65.00 per flat rate hour and do not include diagnostic time or any applicable sales tax."--MSN Autos

My advice is to check out your relay and sensor, before you waste money replacing parts, and good luck!!!

Have you changed or had the calipers tested? Since you changed the pads and rotors maybe you have a bad caliper or even both bad. You changed just the front or the back drums and shoes as well?

You don't say what brakes.

I have had many cavys and worked on them. Great cars.

Your problem sounds like a **** rear wheel cylinder and bad drums/rotors and abs sensor wire.

My car just did everything you describe, I put in new wheel cylinders, drums, brakes, rotors, and 2 new rear brake lines. For less than 200 bucks the car is like new again and has well over 100k.

You can do it yourself. Doesn't take special tools. I followed online how-to's.

I didn't mean for that to be a solution, sorry I am new.

I forgot to mention that when you redo the front brakes make sure the caliper pins slide freely inside the rubber grommets. If they do not, you may need new rubber guides, sliders, and bolts (they come as a kit). $18 for all of that and another 2 dollars for the silicone lube.

Your sliders have to slide or you will have uneven wear and warped rotors. The sticking (if in the rear) is a wheel cylinder. 10 dollars. If it is sticking in the front, caliper rebuild needed or perhaps air got into the lines somehow. If you do need to rebuild the caliper, it is easier to just buy them. Should be 35-65 dollars each.

Abs and trac light stays on on 2004 chevy cavalier when i turn the steering wheel.both abs sensors were changed and no noticable braking problems.what could it be?

you will have to check the abs wiring harness. the wires going to the wheel speed sensors are more than likely broken setting the code and turning the abs light on. hope this helps.

96 Chevy Cavalier brake pedal to the floor

First check your brake fluid.
Either you have a failing brake booster, or you have developed a leak in one of your brake lines. If your brake line is leaking, it should be pretty evident, i.e. oily looking substance sprayed underneath the vehicle or in the wheel wells, if the booster is leaking (the large black/silver almost bowl shaped thing directly in front of the driver under the hood against the back wall) there will most likely be fluid dripping down the firewall below it, if your brake fluid is extremely low/empty, you probably have a leak, that could be at the booster or on a line, or even at the caliper/drum. If it is empty (which can make your ABS light, light up) then you have yourself a leak. Also, if the fluid is really low, you could try adding some, although you will have air in the lines if it was low enough to floor the brake, but you might be able to find the leak if you refill the fluid and cause it to spray from the leak again. Have someone watch under the vehicle while you do this.

I have 1999 chevy cavalier. My ABS light is oh.

Drive it. Then have the rear abs brake sensors checked because they seem to be the first to go in a system like that. Someone with a scan tool should be able to read out any trouble codes in the abs system

2000 chevy cavalier ABS and Brake lights staying on

You had it scanned? They didn't find any codes? If there were no codes, did the ABS computer even communicate? Also did you check the brake fluid, most newer cars have a float switch in the master. If the fluid is low that will set off the lights.

No rear brake light / turn signals on 2001 Chevy Cavalier

The problem is the turn signal/headlight/hazard switch assembly on the steering column which the brake light wiring runs through. The part is easy to change and cost about $50 at most parts stores
