Engine/drivetrain stumbles. 1996 350 vortec, 2WD, Auto w/OD, Positrack.Intermittantly stumbles, sometimes pretty violenty, when climbing a hill with and without cruise control on. Feels like tranny tried to shift and decided not to or like coil dies for 1/4 to 1/2 second. While driving with handheld code reader records misfires briefly but leaves no codes. Same while driving sith scanner reading tranny, no codes. One person suggested possible faulty coil pack but it looks good.Any suggestions?

Yes i acn understand your problem.
Don't panic, its very common with such heavy load engines. I recommend you to follow these steps :

1) Check alignment and tuning also. This is most basic thing which can cause it. But probably your problem is not this one.

2) By adjusting your EGC and configuring the service details you can avoid such stumbles at worst scenarios also.

3) Yeah, as you have described that NO codes are there... then most probably its all about sensor's malfunctioning & that is why Valve processing unit is not exhausting properly. So please, afford to replace your old O-sensors & Temp-sensor with new one. I hope surely you will get rid of your problem.

To start check transmission fluid.
This ca be a problem on wiring to Solenoid pack/ Brake transmission shift interlock solenoid , that is losing contact to ignition wires, or the BTSI solenoid is defective, in that case there may be troubles of this kind when shifting gears.
If this is happening uphill, check also compression and fuel pressure.

Also the Throttle position sensor and the vacuum system determine when to shift gear, check both of them, below the tool to check vacuum and fuel:

Here is the tool : MITYVAC® VACUUM GAUGE AND FUEL PUMP TESTER

Check the transmission kick down shift is not kicking in erratically, in that case you will have downshift.

If it is none of the above , then it can be a bad torque converter.

I have a 2002 au falcon v8 ute ,automatic. And it seems to surge when i am driving up hills under acceleration?Other than that it runs beautifully.Any idea what it could be?

Depending on the slope of the hill, it could be kicking in and out of overdrive. This is normal to a point. I would take it out of OD if there were a lot of hills to climb. Better for the transmsission.

Why does my mazda tribute have no power climbing hills, but the engine revs to a high rpm?

It sounds as if the engine power is getting lost in the drivetrain due to slippage of some sort.

Sounds pretty normal for a 4 cylinder car, if that is what you have. It could also be considered to be normal for a 6 cylinder car. The cars with the smaller motors are designed to downshift in high load situations such as steep hill climbing. This is to compensate for lack of torque. It keeps the motor in it's power band so you have the power to climb the hill.

Od light on

Hi there,

When you press in the Overdrive (OD) switch, this simply allows your gearbox to use the highest gear (when it needs to). For example, if your transmission has 1,2 & D gears, the OD acts as a 4th gear. This is useful on open roads and will help with economy.

If the OD light remains ON, then you have deactivated the 4th gear. This means the car will change up to 3rd gear only, until you depress the OD switch again.

Deactivating the OD is useful, when you wish to "manually" change down to 3rd gear, to climb a hill, or need better acceleration.

pulg in the motor, put the switch on 2wd and then try to in stall it alot of time they can be a pain to put back in. you have to make shur that the motor and gear same location. if your transfer is in 2wd and the motor is in 4wd it wont slide in place motor 2wd transfer 2wd should slide in.

How do I operate the 4x4? It works but I dont know how to put it to use..

okay the truck must be at a stop and shifter in neutral then you can shift into 4wd, this is for snow or wet conditions but more for snow and ice, the 4wd low is for lets say you are stuck in snow or mud this is to get you out its for low speeds only or climbing a hill in mud or snow, not to often is the 4wdlow used.and then 2wd is for all driving conditions, the thing is the 4wd needs some slippery conditions for example driving in 4wd on dry roads puts alot of pressure on the trany drivetrain and the transfer case, the wheels need to slip sometimes to give way in 4wd, hope this helps good day.

Custom buggy wrapped on Astro AWD

All depends on the 4.3 your going to install. The transmission are the same, that both use the 4L60E. E being that the transmission is controlled by a ECM with the engine. If your running a Aspirated 4.3 and not fuel injected, your going to have to run a 4L60 transmission.
As for the AWD the new AWD system on the Astro works off the ABS system as it runs on 2WD till the PCM detects the lost of traction then the transfer case is activated by the ECM.
The earlier Astro and Safari AWD 1991 to 1994 had a true AWD and stayed active, but was not that great off road since it had a 40/60 split ratio front to back transfer.
Good luck and hope this helps.
