Stop lamps won't shut off

When the headlamps are in auto position the stop lamps will sometimes not go off when the car is shut off

This sounds like a intermittent cross short, or by complete coincidence the brake switch is not being opened/closed. just for the oddity look at the brake switch first make sure it is in full contact with the brake pedal if it is not adjust/replace it. and check it for proper operation if voltage or no voltage you will need a wiring diagram to see which it is. If correct operation exists, you will need the wiring diagram of both system's and trace for power that does not belong there.

Check headlamp power relay for having stuck contacts . Swap relay with another . Also check headlamp grounding relay . Both relays are in the under hood fuse box .

There is an issue, you have a dead short in the circuit, no quick fix for this. You must first get a wiring diagram of the entire circuit and then follow it until you locate the shorted wire or component.

Headlights Circuit Description
The headlights are controlled by the body control module (BCM) via the AHL Relay when the headlamp and panel dimmer switch is the AUTO position. When in the AUTO mode, the BCM receives a signal, (voltage) from the ambient light sensor, based on the voltage of the signal of n the sensor the BCM turns the day time running lamp (DRL) lights OFF and the headlights ON. The headlights can also be turned on by placing the headlamp and panel dimmer switch in the head position.
The relay coil is fed by the headlamp and panel dimmer switch or the BCM and the battery B+ buss bar in the underhood bussed electrical center (UBEC). The BCM supplies current to the relay based on the input from the ambient light sensor via CKT 352.
The relay output feeds the LT HDLP and RT HDLP fuses to supply current to the low and high beam lamps on CKT 1340 and CKT 1240. The ground for both the low and high beam lamps is supplied via CKT 524 and CKT 525 to the dimmer switch. The dimmer switch uses CKT 1850 for a ground to G203.
Some circuits are monitored by the BCM, and upon failure may set a DTC.
Park/Side Marker and Tail Lamps
The park/side marker and tail lamps are split between the following 4 fuses:

These fuses receive voltage from the park lamp relay. When the headlamp and panel dimmer switch is in the auto position, the body control module (BCM) controls the relay by grounding CKT 1080 based on the input of the ambient light sensor. The park LPS fuse supplies battery positive voltage (B+) to the relay at all times.
When the headlamp and panel dimmer switch is in the PARK position, the relay is by passed through the INT PRK fuse. Current flows from the PARK LPS fuse through the headlamp and panel dimmer switch to the INT PRK fuse in order to feed the following fuses:

Were is headlight low beam relay


It is located in the under hood fuse/relay box . It's non -replaceable ,if bad whole fuse box has to be replaced ! The low beam headlamps may be turned ON in 3 different ways:

When the headlamp switch in the HEAD position for normal operations

When the headlamp switch is in the AUTO position, for automatic lamp control (ALC)


?€¢
When the headlamp switch is placed in the AUTO position, with the windshield wipers ON in daylight conditions, after a 6 second delay

Battery voltage is applied at all times to the coil and switch sides of the LOW BEAM PCB Relay located in the underhood fuse block. When the headlamp switch is placed in the HEAD position, ground from G202 is applied through headlamps ON switch signal circuit to the body control module (BCM), signaling the headlamps ON request. In response to this signal, the BCM applies ground through the headlamp low beam relay control circuit energizing the low beam relay. With the relay energized, battery voltage is applied through the switch side of the relay, the left and right low beam fuses, and the low beam supply voltage circuits illuminating the low beam headlamps. Ground for the left headlamp is provided at G101 and the right headlamp at G100.
Low Beam Relay Test

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the C2 harness connector at the underhood fuse block.
  2. Connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal A5 and B+.
  3. Ignition ON, command the Low Beams ON and OFF with a scan tool. The test lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states.
  4. ?‡'
    If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.


    ?‡'
    If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.

  5. If all circuits test normal, replace the underhood fuse block.
  6. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the inoperative low beam headlamp. Test for less than 5.0 ohms between the ground circuit terminal B and ground.

    If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.

    Connect a test lamp between the supply voltage circuit terminal A and ground. Ignition ON, command the Low Beams ON and OFF with a scan tool. The test lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states.

    If the test lamp is always ON, test the supply voltage circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the underhood fuse block.

    If the test lamp is always OFF, test the supply voltage circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the underhood fuse block.

    If all circuits test normal, test or replace the low beam headlamp.

In the instrument panel fuse box fuse # 8 CTSY LP 10A ,that's for the dome lights, fuse panel is left side of IP. What are you talking about 4 who drive won't light up or work ? 4 wheel drive ? Do you have two speed automatic or two speed selectable ?

Circuit Description

The indicator lamps circuits consist of 5 individual lamps contained inside the mode/range switch assembly, they are AUTO, 4WD, 2HI, 4HI, 4LO and NEUTRAL. The AUTO, 4WD, 2HI, 4HI, and 4LO lamps are contained inside their respective range button. When the ignition is ON, the transfer case shift control module illuminates the indicator lamp that corresponds to the current ATC gear position by providing a ground through a current limiting driver.
The transfer case shift control module flashes each indicator lamp after a shift has been requested and will continue to flash until the transfer case shift control module can complete the shift. After a shift to AUTO, 4WD, 2HI, 4HI, or 4LO is made, the transfer case shift control module will flash that indicator lamp until the transfer case shift control module receives a high voltage signal on CKT 1695 from the front axle switch.
A solid state circuit located inside the switch supplies ignition voltage to the lamps. The solid state circuit also receives voltage whenever the headlamp switch is in park or headlamp position. When the solid state circuit receives voltage from the headlamp switch it will reduce the voltage that it supplies to the indicator lamps, dimming the lamps when the headlamps are ON.

Replace dimmer switch


The headlamps ( high an low ) are controlled by the LCM lamp control module .
Headlamp Dimmer Switch
Under the left side of the IP, on the base of the steering column

Headlights Circuit Description (Buick)
Battery positive voltage (B+) is supplied at all times to the lamp control module (LCM) through the LH underhood fuse block LCM/HDLP circuit breaker via CKT 242 (RED). When the headlamp switch is placed in the ON position, the headlamp switch input to the LCM is grounded via CKT 103 (WHT). The LCM then supplies battery positive voltage (B+) via CKT 12 (TAN) to the following components:
• Left low beam headlamp
• Right low beam headlamp
When the headlamp dimmer switch is placed in the HIGH position, the LCM removes battery positive voltage (B+) from the low beam headlamps. The LCM supplies battery positive voltage (B+) via CKT 11 (LT GRN) to the following components:
• Left high beam headlamp
• Right high beam headlamp
The LCM provides battery positive voltage (B+) to the appropriate headlamps under the following conditions:
• The ignition switch is in the RUN position.
• The ambient light sensor indicates darkness.
The lamp control module (LCM) monitors the ambient light conditions through the ambient light sensor. The ambient light sensor is a variable resistor whose resistance changes as the surrounding ambient light level changes. As the ambient light decreases, the resistance of the ambient light sensor increases. The LCM measures the resistance across the ambient light sensor and determines whether it is day or night.

What relay's ?
The instrument cluster controls the headlamp systems that include daytime running lamps (DRL). The system allows the headlamps to operate at a reduced intensity when all of the following conditions apply:
• The engine is running.
• The transaxle is not in the PARK position.
• The normal headlamps are not on.
The instrument cluster turns the DRL system on by grounding CKT 592, thereby energizing the DRL relay. This action allows a reduced voltage of 6 volts to flow across the headlamps. If the vehicle has the optional fog lamps, the fog lamp relay will also be energized. The park lamps will turn on and the fog lamps will operate normally. When the headlamp switch is turned to the ON position, the instrument cluster allows normal headlamp operation.
The instrument cluster also has an input from the park brake. If the park brake is in the ON position, the DRL will remain disabled until the park brake is placed in the OFF position. On vehicles with an automatic transaxle, the instrument cluster will disable the DRL until the transaxle has been taken out of the PARK position.

Principles of Operation
The autolamp system provides light-sensitive automatic on/off control of the headlamps and parking lamps controlled by the vehicle security module when the headlamp switch is in the autolamps position. When the ignition switch is turned to the RUN or START position with the autolamps feature already enabled and the ambient light level is dark, the vehicle security module will request the headlamps and parking lamps be turned on. When the autolamps are disabled, the vehicle security module will request the headlamps and parking lamps to be turned off, regardless of the ignition switch position. When the vehicle security module has turned on the exterior lamps and the ignition is turned to the OFF or ACCY position, the exterior lamps will remain on for an additional 20 seconds.
When the autolamps have been enabled and the ignition switch is in the RUN/START position, the vehicle security module will request that the exterior lamps be turned on or off based on ambient light level. If the vehicle enters darkness for at least 15 seconds, the vehicle security module will request the exterior lamps on. If the vehicle enters light for at least 15 seconds, the vehicle security module will request the exterior lamps off. By delaying turning on and off the exterior lamps during short periods of darkness and light, the vehicle security module prevents the exterior lamps from flashing on and off.
