  • patrickfwi24 Apr 17, 2009

yeah the car was working just fine wednesday nite and i went to start it for work thursday morning and it wouldnt turn over so i wouldnt think a starter would go bad over nite or at least id have a warning that it would go bad. the battery may be 2 or 3 years old also

  • patrickfwi24 Apr 18, 2009

if the starter wire is loose can i fix it myself and if i can what wire is it?

  • patrickfwi24 Apr 19, 2009

where is the starter located in the car so i can see if its loose and if it is can i tighten it up myself?

  • patrickfwi24 Apr 22, 2009

i tried jumpin the car and after 5-10 mins it started but it didnt keep going and went back to where it was but it the key turned do u think i have a bad alternator it is 2 years old. the battery is a year old

  • patrickfwi24 Apr 24, 2009

it better not be the switch i had it replaced last year

  • patrickfwi24 May 02, 2009

yeah got a new battery and new bolts and started it and still wouldnt completley start so im baffled really

  • patrickfwi24 May 02, 2009

yeah starts normally then dies slowly. like a cough. then doesnt stay completely started. checked the alternator at autozone they said it was good it passed on their machine. the battery was dead and replaced that and got new bolts. didnt even think of spark plugs it did spark at me today while i was putting the new battery in and then it sparked again when i did the alternator

  • patrickfwi24 May 02, 2009

    wasnt the spark plugs

  • patrickfwi24 May 04, 2009

could it be a fuel filter? i mean it starts then dies slowly like a bad cough could the fuel not be getting somewhere

If you've exhausted all other possabilities, it's probably the ignition switch. It's a wire bundle in the column (left side) that hooks into the key cylinder. About $150 at parts store. Same thing happened to mine and after I replaced it the car fired right up. You'll have to pull the front dash panel off, the bottom under the steering wheel, and the column cover. It's a bit of a pain but it will probably solve your problem. Seems like it has happened in a lot of other Rivieras.

What makes you you think a bad starter will give you a warning, and why can't it be good today and bad tomorrow ? Car are towed in everyday that drove perfectly yesterday. A 3 year old battery is borderline whether th carr is running perfectly or not. First find out the strength of the battery. It needs a least 12 volts. A starter problem will usually be repaired with a rebuilt atarter. Check out out the basics Hope this helps

Ok the starter is located BELOW the L/S cylinder head. or if standing in front of the car , look at the radiator , then down at the engine, and it should be there. As far as it being loose. As far as the STARTER being loose, doubt it. NOW hopefully before check ine connections at the SOLENOID, you've DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY FIRST.

Sounds to me like the battery is DEAD. I seen BRAND new batteries go dead overnight, with a good solid 12V draw on the system amongst other reasons First charge or replace the battery . Then check alternator output and for system drain..

I still say its the alternator. It started with a jump, and the only reason it quit was the battery was dead, The alternator wasnt replaceing the power being used to keep the car running.

Does it crank, like it NORMALLY does, and NOT START ? If the answer is YES, are the spark plugs getting spark, are they soaked with fuel, from you pumping the gas pedal while trying to start it ? Alternator output cannot be obtained till the car starts.

Horn keeps blowing on 1995 riveria won't stop till fuse blows

This exact same thing happened to my 1994 Buick Skylark Coupe. It started to go off just now and then, and it wouldn't stop until the fuse blew (like you said), or I literally punched the steering wheel repeatedly and sometimes it would stop. I assumed the horn was shorting out. One day it just stopped working all together. I took it into the dealership and they said that it had in fact shorted out. I bought a new horn kit on eBay, and had it put in by one of my buddies that is a mechanic for a Nissan dealership, and it resolved the issue. I'm guessing your horn is shorting out as well. I'd bet that the same exact horn that is in the 1994 Skylark is also in your 1995 Riveria. Not SURE, but I'm guessing. Check around for a replacement, or ask the dealer if they can order you one. Hope this helps!

It could be that your ignition pass key is not working properly. The computer in the vehicle is set to start the car only if the proper resistance is measured on the ignition key. If you have several sets of keys for that car, try the other keys. This is not a common fault, but never the less, it is a possibility.

Do the interior chimes and headlights turn on when you turn the key in the ignition???? We have a 95 Riv that gave us the same problem. Occassionally we have to put the key in the ignition, turn it on, move the steering column up and down (sometimes roughly) until the chimes etc. come on (some security thing) then the car will start.
